Theological Themes: I wouldn't say that it's necessarily magic or supernatural but Tortov does meet a number of strange creatures, though they seem to be a relatively natural part of the world the story is set in.

Negative Themes: In one of the special DVD episodes Tortov eats some berries that prove to be hallucinogenic. Given the surreal nature of the show though, it's not even 100% clear which parts of what is shown is due to the berries.
