~Long weekend~

Currently about 2/3 of the way through Legend of Mana, which I've been playing off and on for quite a while, and I have pretty mixed feelings about it. In some ways I sort of like this game, but there are also some things I really don’t like. On the positive side, its watercolor backgrounds are absolutely gorgeous, and I find myself enjoying them highly even though I typically don’t care all that much about games’ graphics. Although there are some fantasy staples like dragons and centaurs, there’s also an incredible amount of variety and creativity in the races that inhabit the world. Between the beautiful locations and its unique inhabitants, the world is absolutely charming, and most of the time the game tends to have a warm, sunny feel.

The gameplay is fairly non-linear in that it consists of 67 subquests that you can complete largely in whatever order you like (though some have prerequisites and connect to each other to make longer story arcs). This doesn’t bother me in the least. However, the game mechanics suffer from poor design in several ways, and I’ve also been frustrated by a variety of things ranging from the tendency of NPCs to stand in the way of the narrow area of the screen I need to walk through to the way that sometimes advancing a quest requires you to find a particular NPC but doesn’t give you any hint of where they are (e.g. when you have to go find Niccolo, and he’s in a random town where he’s never previously appeared). Then there’s the fact that things like tempering armor and weapons are excessively complicated and there’s no way of knowing what effect a certain item will have other than trial and error or consulting online guides. So far I would give this game about a 5/10.

I’ve also played through Metroid II a couple more times and significantly improved my time; I’ve now gotten the second-best ending and have not decided whether I want to continue trying to shorten my time enough to get the best ending. The concept of this game is so simple—hunt down and kill all of the metroids on planet SR388—but it is so much fun to play. I am still impressed by how even working with the Game Boy’s very limited amount of buttons, there are so many different things that Samus can do. It’s also just highly satisfying to see my skill level improving as I play multiple times . . . and since the time required for a playthrough is so short compared to an RPG, I actually can take the time to play through more than once.

Playing Unreal World RPG version 3.14 and Monster RPG 2. Both indie games are fun.

Unreal World is a rogue-like survival simulation rpg set in the Iron Age in Finland. It is so awesome how much depth there is to the game. Although I just name my character a variation of magikarp and make him a runaway slave. XD I usually die after a few minutes and have to start over with a new character.

Monster RPG 2 is a cool old school rpg that is a fun challenge on hard mode.

Demon's Souls. One of the hardest and most-time consuming games I've ever played in my life.

Also Record of Agarest War. Will be even more-time consuming to get all the trophies for this game. Unbelievable.

Playing costume quest at the moment. For me, it is a funny concept of a game. Psychonauts, Stacking and Brutal legend are lined up. Wonder if I can finish them all.

^ I hope so, they are all fantastic! Especially Psychonauts :D

I was playing Deadly Premonition: The Director's Cut but I beat it. Now I'm not sure if I want to play something else or continue with all the sidequests.

Well, in keeping with my "a generation behind everyone else" reputation, I finally got a Wii (my brother gave me his when he upgraded to the WiiU), so now I'm going to replay Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn at least a zillion times, but only after I finish LoZ: Skyward Sword. Goofed off and played Lego Pirates of the Carribean with my sister the other day. Why are the lego games so fun?

Well, yeah. But those were before $20 map packs were "cool". (Though admittedly, I actually enjoyed the World at War campaign.)

Anyways, played a bit of Arkham City today. While I still think it's a great game, I'm not sure if I want to continue my new-game+. I mean, I feel like I've seen and done everything at this point.

I finally managed to get through the Sara storyline of Ever 17. Now that I've gone through both storylines for Shonen, I'm starting with Takeshi's. I just started the Sora one, and am really interested to see how the story will change from a different perspective.

Metroid II: 100% item completion, but my time is still 35 minutes away from the best ending. I guess I should try saving time by skipping some of the items--I don't really need all 250 missiles, for example. But mainly I just need to be more skilled.

Final Fantasy Legend III. A bit of history: this game is a sci-fi/fantasy JRPG released for Game Boy in 1991 and should more properly be called SaGa 3, the third entry in the series that includes the SaGa Frontier games and Unlimited Saga. However, for marketing reasons it was released in the US as Final Fantasy Legend III. While all the other games in the SaGa series were headed by Akitoshi Kawazu, Kawazu did not head up this game because at the time he was working on the SaGa series's debut on Super Famicom: Romancing SaGa. As a result, the distinctive SaGa growth system, in which character growth is based on what skills you use (just like in real life!) is replaced by a generic level-based approach. Apparently there were also some significant changes made in localization, but I played the American version because that's what I own.

I've had this game for a long time and was never able to get all the way through it (usually I got stuck on a boss and wasn't willing to do the grinding to get past it, or I set the game aside for a little while and then forgot what I was supposed to do next). But I recently picked up the DS remakes of SaGa 2 and 3 and decided I really ought to beat the original SaGa 3 first before playing the remake. Largely thanks to the fast-forward button on my emulator, I was finally able to do so.

Negative points about this game include the extremely sparse plot and characterization (typical of early RPGs, NPCs mostly just tell you what you need in order to know what to do next), the monster sprites that keep getting reused over and over again, the generic level-based growth system that makes this game distinctly un-SaGa-like, and the way that players are steered into fighting the last two battles in one particular way, which ends up being a bit boring. Combat is so-so, and if you examine the time travel aspects of the plot very closely, it turns out to be full of holes. The six-class system in which you can make your humans and mutants into robots, cyborgs, beasts, or monsters is sort of interesting I guess, but I can't comment on it too much because in my entire game I didn't really try out the robot/cyborg side of things.

Good points include the boss sprites, most of which are detailed and look really great for the Game Boy platform, and the dungeons which likewise are about as creative as it’s possible to get with the platform’s limitations. But absolutely the best part about this game is that basically the whole plot revolves around your going around to assemble parts and crew members for a time-traveling fighter jet. Then you get to fly around in it. It comes when you call it with your Remote, it attacks your enemies, it occasionally acts on its own because it has a human brain, and SPOILER: Highlight text to read: it comes to help you during the final boss battle. If you don't think that's awesome, you need to revise your definition of "awesome" to include time-traveling fighter jets.

Really looking forward to playing the remake. 魔界塔士サ・ガ万歳!

I've heard of Golden Sun, but never played it. Is it good? I have to decide whether it's worth adding to my already hectic schedule.

I wasn't impressed by Golden Sun. I never got around to finishing it; even though the battle and djinn systems were a lot of fun, I couldn't get over the annoying characters (who just talked and talked and talked...) and the ugly pre-rendered graphics. It's not quite the same, but if you're looking for a really good GBA RPG, check out Yggdra Union, especially if you like Fire Emblem or Advance Wars. It's got its idiosyncrasies, but it's pretty good.

Well, lets see... if you have a problem with magic in video games you probably wont like Golden Sun. Other than that I would say that it is pretty good so far, but if you ever play it make sure you have a walkthrough available because sometimes the game just drops you off in a town and doesn't give much to any clues on what to do next. I would also have to add you should probably be a fan of old school graphics to like this game. The graphics are not ugly in the least, they just take some time to get used to if you only play high quality video games.

Hm, I'll have to give it a try. No, I've never had qualms about traditional magic in video games. It's when it's goes off the deep end of creepy or...disturbing that I tend to shy away from. Though admittedly I haven't run across a lot of games that fit that bill. And most of the games I play have old-school graphics (this coming from a Zelda, Fire Emblem, and Secret of Mana/NES, SNES, GBA fan). Thanks for the info.

Cat Planet: deceptively challenging little free indie explorer/platformer . . . also cute.

Also just finished a game of Iji that I’d started a while back in Extreme mode (thought I would never get through that second part of the boss fight against Iosa) and then played through again in Normal to get the Nanomaster rank. I don’t think I will bother with this game’s Ultimortal mode—Extreme is enough of a challenge for me.

Have been spending a bit of time playing around in Romancing SaGa 3 with Sara as my main character, but if I want to finish the game with her, I have to master Commander Mode, and it is not working out too well for me so far, possibly because I’ve hardly used it at all.

Oh, and I also beat Legend of Mana recently, after having set it aside for a little while. The final boss fight was pretty underwhelming.

I must admit that while we've had this game for a while, I never really picked it up until I saw my younger brother playing it.
