Using 3dTV technology to create a NEW type of split screen

Can you imagine the possibilities of this? At the very least, it would make a two player game crazy, because each person would get the WHOLE SCREEN.

I know it'll be a long while before 3d tvs take over, but this was a benefit that I didn't see coming.

Awesome.

Not only this, but you could also watch two separate shows,I could play while you watch tv, all you would need is separate headphones.

Sigh. I can't wait for the 3D TV fad to be over. Just like Smell-O-Vision. [/crotchetyoldman]

The problem with this idea is that the game console won't be able to put out a full res image for each player, at best you'll get two half res but full size images.

To get a 3D image with one 3D technology they're referring to, there are already twice as many pixels in the width of the screen than normal to accommodate both eyes seeing at full resolution in glasses free 3D, so that really isn't an issue.

The one they're referring to here would be where one set of glasses sees one image and the other glasses use a different setting to see a second image, using the same image onscreen. (think of looking through red/blue 3d glasses, except you see only blue and your friend sees only red). No resolution is lost in this solution either, and you can play from wherever you want.

That's only with the glasses free version. Glasses free restricts where you are in the room, but with glasses, you can sit anywhere. This is a different technology.

I think what he's saying is that current gen consoles couldn't possibly create, say, two full-screen 1080p viewpoints concurrently, regardless of the TV's resolution. It's a problem of the console's power, not the TV display.

Which he's absolutely right about. It would work on a PS3, MAYBE, if they did only 480p level graphics (the PS3 could handle two 480p viewpoints at the same time, probably), but definitely not with 1080p.

Which, I'm sure this isn't intended to be used with the PS3 at all. Maybe PS4, possibly PS5. It depends on if/when 3D TVs become standard, which may not even happen (and god I hope it never does). Besides, with companies working on glasses-less 3D like, oh, say, Nintendo, the fact that this would have to use glasses makes it pretty silly. Not to mention I already WEAR glasses and having to put on a second set of glasses over my glasses is pants-on-head retarded.

That's true, and this is only a patent, so I wouldn't expect anything with or without glasses to come of it for a while, especially since they'd have to alternate sync the shutters on the shutter type glasses, a type that's horribly expensive currently.

One thing you point out is that the resolution could be too high for the systems to render, but I never saw anything indicating a specific resolution for this, so they could feasably cut the high res down to a lower one for multiplayer to keep the processer going, and it is SCEA that posted the patent, so it would be the PS3/3.5/4/whatever that this specific solution would be integrated into, not an X-Box or Wii.
