Aeris no Aerith: Proof

I certainly hope no one takes this as an act of aggression. I just wanted to point it out. I sorta got tired of the argument, but I do offer one more bit of debate on this issue.
Final Fantasy 7 was greatly influenced by the Opera "Carmina Burana" in more than just the last battle song.
Carmina burana was latin, and there is frequent use of the word "Aeris" in one of the songs. Aeris is latin for "Air" and also for "Aether" (the belief in foundation of all matter and energy...) Since Lifestream is a twist on the Aether theory -- that is, Lifestream is said to make up everything (living or dead) in the planet -- It would make sense for her to be named Aeris, now wouldn't it?
Aerith came from the fact that there were bad romanizers in the translation crew who didn't understand the origin of the name. す can only really be transliterated "su" because there is no Th sound in modern Japanese. ス on the other hand can be transliterated as "S" as "su" or as "th" because katakana is used to represent foreign words. Because of that, and confusion about where the name came from, some of the translators called her "Aeris" but some called her "Aerith" Many fans, rabid as they were, latched onto the less accurate transliteration of "Aerith" and it stuck, which is why she is called that in Kingdom hearts. But, it should have been "Aeris" all along.

Actually, thank you for posting that, Bob. I always wondered why people used two different spellings...meant to ask and kept forgetting.

Yeah I've been wondering about the Aeris and Aerith thing. They used Aerith in KH which I thot was kinda awkward....since they has Aeris in FF7 why not take it to KH?..Oh well...Just a minor detail, but can still cause a lot of ruckus lol

Oh cool. I've always preferred Aeris myself - I think it's a lot prettier than Aerith. (sounds like a lisp)

I second that sentiment. And I love names with allusions or double meanings, so that's way, way cool! ^__^ And it's Carmina Burana, which just makes it all the better!

I've always said "Aeris" anyways. It just sounds pretty, y'know? And anyways, she was my favorite character from FF7 in the first place!

ROFL! I tend to agree.
Anyways, I've always said Aeris, and I played Kingdom Hearts before I played FFVII. Aeris just sounds better, and calling her Aerith is rather awkward...Silly translators!

You know, maybe I shouldn't have linked to this thread... I linked as reference only, and it's an old thread, but it was late and I was angerbuzzed so I didn't quite have my capacities together to warn about that.
1. I don't want the same jerks who blasted me to follow me here.
2. I don't want this site being reported as where I am
3. I dont want people here who feel strongly about calling her Aerith to get all infuriated and so forth
Of course, i completely forgot about the lifestream aspect, as that was something else to support this, but I digress...
It doesn't help my case that the wikipedia entry has the misinformation that the Aerith faction goes by, too... Really, though FANS picked up on the usage of Carmina Burana lyrics in the game, even many people at Square didn't. So, though the word Aeris shows up in "Estuans Interis" really close to materia, because it was ambiguous (and a single word is harder to pin down than an entire line of a song) people guessed it came from Earth... I don't know how they figure that Earisu comes from Earth, considering Katakana spellings come from perceived pronunciations rather than the spellings of that language, it would have, more likely, been "Aasu". Earisu was definately supposed to be Aeris, a latin word. Gah... You know what, I'm doing it again.... In any case, I didn't know about the Japanese FFVII guide, and that's considered an official source, so from now on, her name is Aerith... Even if I know the source and they got it wrong, it's pretty much set in stone now. Now I'm just like someone who talks about Cassius Clay.
Still, imagine if the Vick's to Biggs correction had been in reverse... Imagine if they, in more recent games, changed the name to Vicks, havning been Biggs before, and said "The mistake came from the fact that b's and V's are mixed up in japanese, as Japanese doesn't have V's" And some official guide said "It was meant to be "Vicks" as in Victor the whole time." That is, provided the reference was to something less known than star wars... Don't you think the ones who knew would be a bit miffed?

And with that, this thread shall be locked. For one, let's not gravedig old threads (from 2004, in this case), and since there's another thread currently discussing this, why not just keep discussion there?
Locked.
