Kekkaishi vols 10-12
For some reason I'd thought vol 12 was the end of the series, but, if the anime episode list is any indication, I'm only 70% through the manga series. Grr - I had thought I'd started a series that was already complete...

Immortal Regis Volume 3

Another example of a shonen title that begins as a mediocre blend of episodic action and fanservice and then eventually gets foreshadowing and what appears to be a real plot. The competitive serial nature of manga (or manwha in this case) is killing the art form, in my opinion.

Kekkaishi only started in 2004, I think, and it's still running.

Caught up on Kaichou wa Maid-sama!

This just might be my new favorite shoujo manga. Adorable art, snarky manly female lead, fanservice galore. I'm a girl; why am I getting excited at looking at moe maids?! *nosebleed*

.......I feel like my standards drop significantly when I read Cute.

I've actually read the translated part of this as well, mostly out of the desire to put off major papers. The female lead is an interesting person, but the foreordained love interest is such a pointlessly irritating jerk. You can practically feel the obligatory possessiveness grating against the rest of the plot.

Heh. Shoujo manga readers think that's hot. ¬_¬;;;
(But I'M in love with Misaki =D)

Finished Mx0. Kano's a smaller mangaka, I guess, so his work gets pulled, but I didn't expect it to end so soon. Things were just starting to develop! I really personally preferred the whole Kuzumi-dishonestly-using-his-noobish-magicless-wits-to-escape-dangerous-situations above the whole power-up-and-fight-for-6-chapters-against-progressively-stronger-opponents of the *cough* other Jump series. *sad*

And Kano seems to really love open and unsatisfying endings, like in Pretty Face. He says that he does it deliberately out of artistic choice, but that doesn't make me any less annoyed.

Reread Stray Little Devil vol.3 yesterday.I have been rereading the series since I bought vol.1 finally.Need vol.5 to finish it though. My personal favorite character is Lizyerra.I love the way she tries to look after Pam and her friends.Oh,and for a full blooded devil Vine is a real sweetie.

Double Arts

Anyone else still following this? I can't tell if it will go the route of normal shonen or be a bit more interesting. On one hand the main character has his "everybody work together" power but on the other hand the narration implies this isn't a good thing. Next week's chapter will probably determine how much I enjoy the series - either doing the heroic shonen thing is going to get people killed, or it will be even more stupid for subverting its subversion.

Yeah, it wouldn't bother me all that much if I didn't know that was the reason.

And regarding Mx0, I agree that it's sad. But I guess they call it shonen for a reason, so you can't expect interesting series to hold out. Actually, I disliked the direction of the ending overall. I would have much preferred it if he had kept gaining power in unorthodox ways (like the mandrakes, and the Black Plate before it was revealed to be business as usual).

Actually, I find this the most potentially interesting new Jump series, after perhaps Psyren. The concept at least seems fairly unique, even if the main character particularly isn't. And it also appears to be trying to jump into a narrative instead of fooling around with short arcs first as is usually the case. But I don't want to jump the gun on it, in case it collapses in a few chapters or gets cancelled.

As for Kano, yeah, a lot of people were surprised that it was Mx0 that got the cut. After two not-quite successes, he probably needs to move to a different magazine.

Like SQ, where all the <s>rejects</s> go?

Jump should just like cut itself in half. I guess you would think that such a popular mag would bring its titles tons of attention, but people buy the 10-pound thing just for Naru and Buri...

Didn't know Double Arts was a Jump series. Dunno how that affects my prospects of reading it. =/

Dogs vol. 1 COMPLETED
JoJo's Bizarre Adventure vol. 70

Stone Ocean continues swimmingly.

I decided to read Dogs by chance and ended up enjoying it a fair bit. Collection of short stories, kind of a hitman crime drama and kind of not really at all. This is the prequel/backstory volume, so I will probably read the rest that follows.

Well, possibly, or he could just switch publishers entirely which is unusual I think, but not completely unheard of.

Saikano Volumes 1-7

Yes, I read the entire thing more or less at once. It was a bit of a trip. Though I really didn't like the plot itself (more slice-of-life/coming-of-age/love-during-apocalypse) I was pulled in by the quality of the writing. It was decent, really, which is something I don't often see in manga. But looking at the work as a whole, I'm still struggling to decide whether or not I think it is meaningful.

I wish I could recommend it to you despite that, but it's too early to tell. Even if it survives, I only see potential and it could still end up being a pretty typical series.

In English, "Switch", vols 1 & 2. Not great but not half bad.
Also, finally broke down and read a volume of Chrono Crusade. Eh.
And just purchase Hayate vol 7. Will read soon.

Still working on 20th CB in Japanese.

I wish more of the court guard companies had specialized roles in the Soul Society. Special forces, medical and support unit, science branch, sure, fine, but the rest seem like just a lot of captains.

MC Law Volume 1

There's something appealing about a lawyer manga, no matter how hip and unusual it tries to be. Right now it's just a few episodes that are competent but not incredible. However, I remain interesting in the hope that it will flesh out the idea of producing significant change through law practice.

Ressentiment Volume 1

Not for everyone by any means and it doesn't receive my recommendation. However, the reason I read past a few pages is because of how seriously it takes the pathetic nature of its protagonist and those like him. Everyone in real life is pretty repulsive, which creates an interesting dichotomy. If the author means to be making a serious statement about reality versus fantasy he has my interest, but certain things make me doubt that - which would be even worse, because his manga would be exactly the kind of entertainment he appears to critique. In any case I'm not sure yet.
