Poison in the Cavern

This is a story I made for English class. It's quite long but please read and tell me what you think! :)

I remember the day long ago, when disaster struck upon my friends and fellow classmates. I remember seeing the fear in my best friend’s eyes, as she struggled for survival. I remember feeling the fire burning in my eyes, as I knew that only I could save them.

One night, hidden deep in a thicket of trees, there was an old cavern once used for crystal mining. It is now closed up, but for safety reasons. It is not because the cavern itself was unsafe but what was inside it.
Against a wall, a bolder hid a pathway to the darkest area of the cavern, cold enough to freeze water, making stalagmites and stalactites cover the damp ceilings and floors. At the bottom of the path, a most unusual surprise is revealed. On the wall is a giant puzzle, created thousands of years ago. Miners in the early 1600 found this puzzle while mining crystals. One miner discovered a prophecy that was carved next to the puzzle.
“What seems like art
is simply more
a world of wonder
to be restored.
One day a loss,
will cause destruction,
to bring a plague,
of reconstruction.
Before 120,
lost and found,
shall come together,
bringing society
alive forever.
Something is nothing,
nothing is something,
when placed with its holder,
nothing will be bolder,
and something will be older,
bringing forth the light.â€

That Sunday I was collecting trash around the back of my church, when I saw something. From under a bush I pulled out a small puzzle piece. Figuring it probably came from a puzzle in the nursery, I put it in my pocket for later. When I tried to look for the puzzle from which the piece came from, nothing matched. So I kept the piece in my pocket.
It was around 1:30 on that same day, when I went over to my friend Amy’s house.
“Put this movie in!â€

Amy’s mom drove us quickly to the school. I ran down the halls and dashed into the ER Ward. When I entered the room, I nearly passed out at what I saw. There, sitting in a corner, was not just the person Megan had told me about, but a ton of my other friends as well! My best friend Stephanie was lying helplessly in a cot, breathing deeply. I begged to God that this was only a dream. But it wasn’t.
“Steph?â€

I had taken my life savings with me. I mostly had spent it on transportation and food. But it was the third day now, and already I was running low on cash. To save money, I began traveling by foot. I followed a map that I had printed out from the Internet from the school library. By walking, I would have enough money for food to last me throughout the journey. When I found a patch of woods, I would sleep there during the night; otherwise, I would keep walking until I found a wooded area. I might take me until 1:00 in the morning, but I didn’t care. Every time I fell, I saw flashbacks of my friends dying back home. With that, I was highly encouraged to continue.
That night, a thunderstorm popped up while I was looking for a place to sleep. Around that time I was close to New York, so I pressed on. Suddenly, I heard a crack. I whirled around only to discover a tree, which had been hit by lightning, was coming straight down at me! Screaming, I jumped out of the way and landed in a puddle of mud. I slid down the bank and plunged headfirst into a creek. I swam to the surface and scrambled out quickly. Water, I knew, was the worst place to be during a storm. So I found a patch of grass and slept there as the storm slowly drifted away.

My eyes slowly opened the following morning to the sound of robins in the trees above me. Standing up, I rolled up my sleeping bag and fastened it to my backpack. Even though it was soaking wet, I had no time to wait around for it to dry. Because of the storm, I hadn’t gotten much sleep, so I took a bus to New York. I kept thinking about everyone back at home. Today was the fourth day. I had until midnight tonight to get the puzzle piece back or else… Well you all know.

Megan brushed Julie’s hair behind her head, as she listened to her trying to rest.
“Hang in there. Kristen will get that piece back to the cavern real soon. I’m sure of it.â€

I stepped off the bus to get some food in downtown New York, and then I used the rest of the money I had to take a bus trip up to the woods where the cavern was. I knew I would run out of time if I walked.
I didn’t know the ride would take so long. It took many hours to get there. The cavern was in a thicket of trees on the very edge of the top borderline of New York. With stopping for food, resting in parks, and a long ride, it was around 10:30pm when I finally got there. I ran into the woods with lightning speed, for I knew I didn’t have much time. It didn’t take long for me to find the cavern. Police cars, fire trucks, and ambulance lights from all around made it almost impossible not to find. They were all surrounding the cavern. Yellow caution tape was hung like it was a Christmas decoration. It was everywhere. I knew I couldn’t just walk right in. I’d be arrested for sure, so I was going to have to sneak in.
I crawled from tree to tree and from rock to rock, kind of like how cartoon characters do this. When no one was looking, I turned around and made a beeline for the cavern. I leaped in, slid down a tunnel, and landed in a pool of water—like I wasn’t wet enough already. I stood up. Dripping, I checked my watch. 11:00. I had one hour. I had to find the puzzle fast.

Amy was sitting on the windowsill, praying to God. She was crying hard, but what else could she do? Though Amy could not see, I was crying too as I ran through the tunnels of the cavern, dodging rock slides and other unsuspecting surprises. All my friends except for three were going to die in less than an hour if I didn’t put that puzzle piece back in time.

At around 11:30 I finally found the giant bolder that opened a path to the puzzle. Pushing the bolder aside, I began to walk. I pulled my hood over my head, and put my gloves on. It was cold, and pitch black. I had to hold my hands out in front of me so I wouldn’t lose my way. I bumped into another giant bolder in front of me. When I looked over it, there was the puzzle. It was hard to see, but I knew it was it. But that wasn’t all I saw. A large group of men stood around the puzzle, all armed with knives. I ducked down. “How am I supposed to get to the puzzle?â€

Heartbeats, breathing, and blood flow were all going very slowly inside my friends at that very moment. Some by then had stopped breathing, for others, their hearts stopped beating. The colors of their skin had been flushed out of all my sick friends. Now knowing what to do, Ally sat in a corner and cried. Megan and Amy pleaded with God for them not to die. They were clueless as to what else to do.
“Kristen!! Help us!!â€
