Boxes- Which ones do you fit in?

Postby Kuro-Mizu » Tue Jan 16, 2007 7:55 pm

This is a speech I'm giving tomorrow in speech class... Wish me luck!

ALSO I have one part where I refer to calling somone "gay" as an insult and I say it is a bad thing.... It shouldnt be an issue me thinks!

here it is-

Boxes, Society creates them but do you fit in one? Do you have a box that says prep, goth, jock, or maybe skater? Have you ever thought of leaving your box or are you afraid to? Maybe you destroyed your box a long time ago or maybe you struggle to keep others from finding out whats underneath your box.

I believe that if we all took off our boxes and accepted the humanity that lies underneath we wouldn't have all this fighting and sorrow that permeates the world today. But those are two things almost no one is willing to do. If we take off our box others will see what we really are and we will be exposed to their cruel comments. If we see someone else who has thrown off their box we become the ones who inflict the pain, we always shoot down the ones who did what we wish we had dared.

So where does that leave us? Do we just sit here and let society box us in? Are we forever trapped in this cycle? I say that we can fight back and that in fact society doesn't happen to you but you can happen to society. What will you do with that power?

I have personally chosen to be free. I won't let societies rules guide me. I won't let my actions be restricted by what most consider to be the norm. If I want to wear black tenebrous clothing I will. Not because I'm “gothicâ€

Well God doesn't fit in a box, so why should we humans (his crowning achievement in Creation?)

I'm not suggesting we are on level with God by the way.

I think it's important to love God and the people around you as an extension of God's love for you. It's not easy (incredibly hard even) but nothing's impossible with God's help.
And it certainly breaks down the barriers that many have.

mhhmm... I agree!

thats My point in this speech... that we put each other in these boxes (stereotypes) to protect ourselves when really were opening ourselves to hurt.

the true root of the stereotype goes deeper than just self-preservation, it starts with the idea that somehow separating yourself from what is different is beneficial for you, this principal drives racism, sexism, and every other form of discrimination

several years ago i actually did a paper very similar to your speech, but what i did was i took the issue with stereotypes and cliques in school and sort of transposed it on to the world scene and showed how it's the exact same problem that plagues the world that we find within the classrooms and playgrounds of our schools

and concerning w4J's comment, you're right, we're not level with God, but we are made in His image, so that's all the more reason why we shouldn't expect to categorize each other so easily

So how did your speech go?

[i]Two vast and trunk-less legs of stone stand in the desert. Near them, on the sand, half sunk, a shattered visage lies. Round the decay of that colossal wreck, boundless and bare the lone and level sands stretch far away. On the pedestal these words are inscribed:

“My name is Ozymandias, king of kings:
look on my works, ye mighty, and despair!â€

Happens when I give speeches too. It's hard to pace yourself! You just want to get in, do it, and be done with it!
K. Ayato: What happens if you press the small red button?

*Explosion goes off in the movie*

mechana2015: Does that answer your question?

K. Ayato: Perfectly.
