You can never do enough, that's why grace is so powerful and amazing. It's both undeserved and costly.
Growing in your relationship with Jesus requires time spent with him in prayer, reading the Bible, faith discussions with others, helping and serving people, listening to God, admiring his creation. There is no particular set way but all require you give God your all. I can't say I've been good at this of late, but that's the desired outcome.

How do you get closer to your friends?

Spend time with them.
Get to know them.
Talk with them.
Listen to them.
Care about them.

Same goes for Jesus

Read your Bible and try to meditate on it. That helped me a lot.
