Where do you start??

I have always wanted to read the Bible from start to finish...but have never been able to do it...exactly where do you start and how do you keep on it...thier are some things in the Bible that bores me..like when it starts talking about all these people that are born and how long they live and when they die...that really is boring to me and I can't read though it..and I can't even pronouce the names so I give up and stop reading...someone help please!!

I know what you mean about getting bored with some parts. I too have trouble with that, except my trouble is mostly with the lattermost part of the Old Testament, the prophetic books.

what i do is i have this schedule that i got through my church and it has a little bit of the old testament to read everyday AND a little bit of the new testament to read every day so i can read about old testament israel (the old testament sometimes reads like a textbook to me-a very good textbook) but i can also read new testament stuff (which reads more like a novel).

its just one or two chapters from OT and NT everyday, its simple, and it doesnt take too long (which is good with my schedule), but its still beneficial (i always find something that helps me through the day).

you just have to stick to it everyday until it becomes a habit.

I agree with majanthehun--once you get in the habit, it almost becomes second nature. In fact, I tend to look forward to my time reading. I started with the beginning of the New Testament and read through that first, then began the Old Testament, which I am currently still working on. It helped me to basically commit to one chapter a day, every day. Even when I traveled I stuck with it, reading the Bibles in the hotel rooms. But I read only one chapter per day, long or short, so I didn't get overwhelmed. And yeah, the parts of the Old Testament with the names and the descriptions of the dimensions of the temple, etc. were difficult to get through, but they're there for a reason, and it gets better afterward. I'm on Psalms now, which I'm really enjoying.

Above all else, pray about it. Ask God or The Spirit to guide you and help you get meaning out of the Word. Pray a quick prayer before each time you read. Set that time apart for you and God each day. If you can , you might even set a certain time each day to read. For me, that's tough, so I usually vary the time.

Read every 3 chapters in old testament and new testament every day. Buy graphic book. They really help. You can find them in Christian Store. Also, It's nothing's wrong to ask your dad to explain it for you. I do that all the time.

First of all...

My church uses 3 books. The Bible, The Book of Mormon(no, I do not go to a Mormon church), and The Doctrine & Covenants.

What would that church be, and what makes it different from a mormon church? Do you consider them to be authoritative?

I have read the bible through once. My problem wasn't reading it the first time, it was the advice of everyone else that I should continue to read it for the rest of my life. I can't seem to get into that. I'll pick it up and read a few chapters here and there, but I can't bring myself to start reading it again.

They are important if you want to have an understanding of the history and connnections between different books in the Old Testament. However, that doesn't make them interesting. Since you are posting on this forum, that means you have at least one place where you can use a pseudonym. Do you play PC games online, or make usernames for anything else? Well, there are a lot of cool sounding names in those lists if you are looking for them. I used quite a few of them on my Diablo 2 accounts, as a matter of fact.

So, when it comes to reading the bible, do what works for you. Go at your own pace, and don't necessarily read though in order, but keep in mind that you will eventually have to come back to the things you skip if you want to read the whole bible.
