I have not seen anyone here resort to name-calling over their taste in movies. I haven't seen anyone be "almost always negative" either.

I'm sorry. It is the way they attack them for their opinion. People infer through their words that they are stupid. They never say it bluntly. I will take out the word stupid.

Calling the movie stupid is not the same as calling a person stupid for liking the movie. Sounds like someone needs to watch the Nostalgia Critic's "Top ten movies I hate that everyone else likes" and "Top ten movies I like that everyone else hates." I've repeatedly called the prequels garbage because that's what they are. A person can still like a terrible thing and be a great person.

I like Kung Pow and Unbreakable and everyone seems to hate those. They think they're terrible and unfunny. Guess what? I disagree, and I can say "Yes, I understand that you dislike them, but I enjoy them." I've seen people here (like me) argue that contrary to rock's opinion, the movies are written terribly (which they are), but I don't think anyone has said "No you have to agree with me OR ELSE and you're totally wrong for liking them!"

I do think both Fish and I did make a remark about how he said he viewed the movies "by themselves" without reference to the previous movies, only to turn around and say "I liked them because they show you things about the previous movies" which is of course contradictory. Same as if I said "Man I hate caramel it's the worst thing in the world" and then went "Oh man I love Snickers it's like the best candy bar ever!"

Episode 1 was awesome back when I was 9, but under further criticism, the movie kinda breaks down. When I look at it now, there's some good scenes, but as a whole...not so much. The final lightsaber fight is pretty effective, and the podracing scene was cool (despite being absolute, shameless filler). That pretty much describes my feelings about the prequels, actually: it's got enough effective scenes and effects, but as a whole, it just doesn't hold up. For example: the prequels tell a story heavily dependent on dialogue, but the dialogue is awful, so it all falls apart because what's being said is taken as laughable rather than serious.

Also, Hayden Christiansen. My sister thinks he's a total babe, etc., but...guy can't act.

Well, here's the thing:

There is a societally objective way to measure how well a story has been told. The Star Wars prequels fail this test spectacularly. By a storyteller's metric, these are terrible stories. They are inconsistent, and don't make very good use of their medium.

Now, that isn't to say that it makes you stupid to like things that are bad by this measurement. Everyone has something that they like that isn't good. It's just that these things shouldn't be praised as "good" when they are actually kind of terrible.

I mean, I like the American Godzilla movie far more than anyone ever should. Does that mean that it is a fantastic movie? No. But it does mean that I like it, and that's okay.

If it was us, what did that make Me? After all, I'm one of Us. I must be. I've certainly never thought of myself as one of Them. No one ever thinks of themselves as one of Them. We're always one of Us. It's Them that do the bad things."

I like Kung Pow as well. Many people dislike it. I find it funny.

Not everyone will (or should) have the same taste in movies --it's all part of our individuality and diversity --life would be boring if everyone liked the same things.

I think this is being taken way too seriously. I have not seen anyone call anyone else names. So no assumptions should be made --give people the benefit of a doubt. It's a movie. Someone saying a movie that you like is dumb should not be seen as an attack on your person.

For the record, while no one has soft-pedaled their dislike for the films, I haven't seen anything in this thread that in my judgment equals a personal attack per se. I'm sure the other mods agree, or they would have said so when they posted.

Wait? What is wrong with Last Exile? It's far better than the Star Wars prequels.

This.
Cognitive, I'm the same. I don't think it's brilliant but I find it to be a really fun movie. It probably didn't hurt that I had just started highschool when it came out.

It depends.
rocklobster (post: 1463270) wrote:Really, I think the main problem is that the prequels aren't "old enough" yet. Give them more time to age, and maybe more people will stop saying they stink. I mean, just because an opinion is popular and in vogue doesn't mean it's right. Let's not forget popular opinion also got some bad things off the ground.
rocklobster (post: 1463450) wrote:But I'm entitled to my opinion folks, and I think the prequels are great too. And no one's going to change my opinion. Why do I think they're good? Mostly because I didn't have nostalgia goggles on. I viewed them as they should've been, as independent works.
Can't the public opinion disagree with you without being treated like morons?

Taken at face value, both these posts would imply people only dislike the prequels because we're sheep who think it's trendy to do so, because we're old guys who hate new things]drunk on nostalgia[/I] for the originals and refuse to let George Lucas tamper with them.

So I post about my misgivings and provide some examples and suddenly I'm the one who breeds negativity and talks down to people? That's not how it works.

I think that's been dealt with. Back to Star Wars.

Ah I see, so you don't have a problem with someone calling something objectively bad until you like it. :p

And I haven't seen Last Exile but from what I've heard of it I'd watch the Star Wars prequels every day for the rest of my life than watch Last Exile once.

At least the prequels have Rifftrax.

I thought the blatant Ben-hur race rip-off was kinda funny. Not to mention both podracer games were worth having ep 1 around for. XD

I loved Episode 1 when I was a kid. I practically had it memorized.

Episode 2 came out, and I liked that. My love for Episode 1 had diminished by this point.

Episode 3 came out. I was... well, I enjoyed it. I went to the midnight showings of 2 and 3, and I had a lot of fun. Star Wars fans are one of the funnest crowds.

Are they great movies? No, not at all. They're laughably bad most of the time. But I can understand why people still find them enjoyable. These days, the only part I really like is Obi-wan and Anakin's light saber battle. I loved it when it first happened, and I still like it. It's ridiculous and over the top, but gosh-darnit, you can tell everybody was putting forth their best to make it emotionally compelling and awesome. Granted, some people's best is not particularly impressive (dear heavens, why is anybody still casting Hayden Christensen?), but it was fun to watch.

These days, the Star Wars prequels are movies that I enjoy watching for their badness. No matter how bad they are, they aren't boring. Even the romance scenes, which would normally just put a stop in the story and kill audience interest, are highly entertaining for the sheer inanity of the dialogue. And for the fact that they hate sand. SAND CANNOT GET ENOUGH HATE, IN MY OPINION!

That pic above is of my own MAL rating. I like the show (as you can see), but, even more than that, I enjoy Fish Epic Quest to convince people that LE is bad.

I kid, I kid. Actually I think the most comprehensive post he's made on this site about why it sucks is here:

But they might go into more detail in the podcast.
