There were a few things that deviated from the book such as the absence of Tom Bombadil but overal I think it was the best transference from book to movie Ive ever seen.

I thought they did a very good job of adapting the story onto screen. Yes, major elements and characters and events WERE left out or over looked, but their attention to detail overall made those left-out things miniscule problems. The film makers stayed true to the story and the integrity of the main characters, and though I was a little disappointed at some of the scenes that were cut (or weren't even shot), I loved the movies as a whole.

Yes I also wish Sean Astin had gotten Best Supporting Actor... I think he had the best performance in the whole movie, in my opinion. Even better than Viggo's.

And about what Link Antilles said... I agree that sometimes Tolkien really aggrivated me, especially when he'd go on about the geography and scenery, because that kind of stuff just goes over my head, and even looking at the maps didn't help me too much. But the awesome story just kept me reading, and I really like the dialogue in the book. Tolkien wrote some really witty stuff. But I also think that LOTR is written kind of like the Bible... just the writing style and stuff. Maybe it's just me?

I hope they put in the Houses of Healing part. ^_^ I really liked that.

Does anyone know if and when there's gonna be an extended version box set out?

There will be an extended Box set, and I think it will arrive sometime around December or so.
And yes, the Houses of Healing should be in the extended ROTK.
Heart of Sword's Rhapsody

Money, get away
Get a good job with good pay and you're okay
And all and all you're just another brick in the wall
Shoutin’ in the street gonna take on the world some day
But Bismallah will not let me go
Because I'll see you on the dark side of the moon

Tommy used to work on the docks
Union's been on strike
Bright eyes burning like fire
And exposing every weakness
However carefully hidden by the kids

Who will love a little Sparrow
Who's traveled far and cries for rest
Spare him his life from this monstrosity

I've seen a million faces and I've rocked them all
And if the band youre in starts playing different tunes
We will we will rock you
We will we will rock you!

Yeah, the extended edition is supposed to be LONG! And the advertisements just say "Holiday 2004," but I hope they release it in November like the other two (so it'll be out just in time for my b-day!)!
And I'm glad to hear that the Houses of Healing part will be in there! It's one of my favorite parts of the book, the chapter is just SO awesome! I was SO glad that Eowyn actually ends up falling for someone other than Aragorn!
I'm also looking forward to a boxed set of the Extended Editions, but I shudder to think how much it will cost. O.O

Oh, me too, but I've been a good girl and avoided buying them separately. ^_^

I like Eowyn so much better than Arwen because
she actually went into battle, and killed the Lord of the Nazgul. Which was a kickin' part.
I've also been hearing rumors of a tentative Trilogy Box Set which, if it pushes through, would come out in 2006, assuming that they would find even more material that wasn't included in the EEs.

But it's very tentative and it's just a thought.

Here's the excerpt of the interview regarding the matter:

Q: Finally, there are many rumors about a mega-special edition “Trilogy Box.â€
