With both songs being in episode 1 that can only mean the 'Failure success' song is about Twilight heading out to save the Crystal Kingdom. Which completely crushes my dance theory. This is all very interesting. I know I'm ruining some of the suprise by looking at these comic con spoilers, but like you said Bio, it does get me excited.

[spoiler] The new villain sounds rather interesting. Even if I only know his name so far, it sounds like the season 3 premiere is going to be excellent.

I don't know, they could do an episode like this really well, but they could also mess it up pretty bad. What do you guys think?

Interesting synopsis. This is probably the one I'm looking the most forward to so far.

[spoiler]It's a bit of a two bladed sword for me though. This doesn't seem to be the Scootaloo episode and this looks like the bully episode that was mentioned a while back. So there's a chance that since Scootaloo isn't the focus she wouldn't be bullied for being unable to fly, but then again she could still be bullied for it even if she's not the focus. If she is bullied I expect it won't confirm that she'll never be able to fly, because if they go down that route they're going to have to put a lot more focus on it not to mess it up and sound like some Scootaloo-hate fanfic.
It also means the Scootaloo episode isn't a bully episode and is going to be awesome!

Of course we also get more AB, more Apple family, another deep lesson and a new character. Exited? You bet![/spoiler]

@Bio Plus: Yeah, I can see what you mean.

[spoiler] I would be quite annoyed if it turned into a Scootaloo hate episode (even if she's personally my least favorite of the Cutie Mark crew.) However, I imagine the episode having the bully tear apart each of them for different things that either they can't do, or things they like. That's what I think, anyhow. [/spoiler]

To tell you the truth, I found the season premiere a mixed bag.

[spoiler] It began well, I totally dug the return of Princess Cadence and Shining Armor, as well as Spike having singing rule. King Somber also looked really cool to.

But, things really started to wind down later on. Too much time in my opinon is spent on the Crystal fair, and the ponies efforts to keep the Crystal ponies from discovering about him. It felt monotonus and sometimes boring (now, some parts were funny, but some of the humor fell flat.) Twilight's descent into the labyrinth was interesting (as well as the mirror that brings worst nightmares to life), but overall, there was nothing that truly wowed me, or made me really appreciate Somber as a villain like I did Discord, or even the Queen of the Changelings.

The climax was certainly epic, but the way it winded down was boring, and we never did find out about what the "next step" in Twilight's studies was. I'm hoping we'll find out in a future episode.

I hate to be a spoil sport, maybe I had unfair expectations based on how much I loved the Royal Wedding episodes, but almost everything that episode did well was something this episode didn'd do as well. Don't get me wrong, overall I enjoyed it, and The Legend of Zelda vibe I got from various parts of the episodes were cool, but it isn't in the level of the previous season premieres/finales. [/spoiler]

But that's just my take.

I agree with ZeldaFan that it wasn't as good as the other premiers. But it was a good episode. There was some pacing issues: The Spike rescue part was too short and rushed, they could have done less with Sombre looming and put it towards the Spike rescue as it didn't accomplish much.
But I liked the part where Twilight goes to get the heart, as well as the parts of the crystal fair. I'm glad we got to see the jousting. Rarity stole the show, she was my favorite in the episodes and the others, except for Pinkie, was all great.

I do have two major problems with the episode though:
One: I hated the 'failure success' song. It was a great song with well done animation. But it didn't fit in the story, as well as the 'Twilight's test' plot device. These two only work together with each other with no connection to the plot whatsoever. The vibe the song gave was off and using a test to force Twilight in making a difficult choice was weak and unnecessary.

Two: They slaughtered Pinkie's character, she was completely OOC. Her randomness always had some form of subtle intelligence and meaning, here it just didn't work. They made her the stereotypical annoying character I was afraid she'd become at the start of FiM and for the first time EVER, my favorite of the main six annoyed me.

[spoiler] I liked Pinkie Pie whining about wanting a flugle horn. Anyway, I thought this was a good episode because the moral was that sometimes you have to make decisions that may put you in danger. I was really shocked when Twilight realized she was not the one who had to make the sacrifice and that Spike had a better chance because he was smaller and faster.
