Doctor Who

So I'd kinda like to get into some Doctor Who, but I know next to nothing about it, really. Where should I start? Is it the kind of series that more or less lends itself to jumping into the beginning of any story arc, or would I be totally lost if I didn't start from the beginning? Can ya help a young man out? 44

Yeah, it's true you can pretty much start wherever you like. I like Tom Baker (the 4th doctor) best, as well as Colin Baker (the 6th doctor).

If you jump in anywhere, you may be lost for a while. It's not bad to start at the very beginning (the series actually started back in the late 50s early 60s), but you may be very bored. The very first black and white season of Doctor Who, while interesting, moves very slowly.

A good place to jump in would be the relaunch of the series that started in 2005 (starring Christopher Eccleston). That series gives you a pretty good idea of how the series goes and what it's about and has a bit more face paced action to it.
After that, you can either venture onward to the next 3 seasons or track backwards to the previous seasons.

The only important part you have to know about the series is that the main character (called The Doctor) can regenerate if his life is close to ending for any reason. Because of this, throughout all the seasons of the show, you will see quite a few different actors playing The Doctor (ten to be precise, soon to be eleven, now). They are all the same character, just a different face. XD

Yeah, it's sort of like how James Bond has been portrayed by five different actors (I think it's five).

I appreciate the input. Are there any particular story arcs you could recommend? I'm pretty much shooting in the dark on this.

I say that you should start with the 2005 relaunch. The first few episodes are self contained and will explain most of the basics of the show, and give you a good picture of what the show can be like.

I'd recommend the storyline where the fourth doctor fights the daleks. I forget what it's called.

I echo what Mech mentions because it gives you a little taste of everything that can be in the show. And it explains stuff like Timelords, the TARDIS, Daleks, etc. Stuff that is important to know about the show in order to understand it.

@ Rock: That's either "Genesis of the Daleks" or "Destiny of the Daleks". Either one is okay, but may still leave one confused. ^_^;

Is that really even an option? I thought most of the First Doctor's episodes were wiped by the BBC.

Some of the videos of the oldest seasons, though hard to find, still exist. The chance of finding all of them is rare though (you can mostly gather bits and pieces, but rarely a whole season). Hence why the relaunch is a better choice to watch first. ^_^

There was a fire that destroyed some of the Dr. Who episodes... I don't think it was season one, though it could be. From what I've heard, said episodes, whichever ones they are only available as audio currently.

Actually, the BBC wiped them to make space for newer stuff. Unlike US television the BBC, back then, had a policy against re-runs and basically only aired a show once or twice despite popularity. The episodes were destroyed, just like that, along with other popular shows (including a historic first appearance of the Beatles). According to Wikipedia there are 27 incomplete serials from the first 6 years and 108 episodes missing. It used to be almost twice that, but many had been recovered when the show was sold to overseas markets.
