The Chrysalids - anyone read it in school?

I remember in gr. 10 I had to read this book and it didn't sound half bad, revolving around kids that can read each other's minds. But once we got it, it wasn't the greatest book to be reading:/ I mean, it's one of the book choices that students across the continent read and yeah.

Lots of stuff in this book bugged me. For once hypocricy was all over. Since the story takes place in a post nuclear war, the Bible was one of 2 surviving books. And of course after nuclear war, there are mutations. So where in the Bible does it say that deformed people shouldn't be part of our society and should be exiled :/ Actualy, my teacher wasn't bringing up the best topics to talk about when we read the book. Sayign stories on how he hated going to church when he was little, and then asked to raise your hand if you were Christian in the class. Me and a guy from my youth sort of did, but it was a pretty awkward situation :/

Another thign about the book, was incest. There were parts as this guy as his half-sister or whatever were intimate and that just wasn't good. Someone commented on the teacher about it and he just said that it was a more "mature subject" in the book, but it's not about maturity, it's about morals!

Anyhow, anyone else read this book and share some of the same thoughts as I did or have comments or whatever?
