CAA RSS beta trial

Postby Mithrandir » Thu Mar 09, 2006 11:31 pm

OK. For those of you who know how to use this feature, CAA is running a limited trial for RSS feeds. Here's the dirt:

Feed address:
http://www.christiananime.net/external.php

Instructions for Firefox:
1. Open the Manage Bookmarks link.
2. Go to File->New Live Bookmark
3. Name it CAA_RSS (or whatever)
4. Address is: http://www.christiananime.net/external.php
5. Drag the resulting "folder" into the "Bookmarks Toolbar" for best results.
6. Close the bookmark manager.
7. You may have to go to View -> Toolbars -> Bookmark Toolbar to enable this.

Wanna check just a specific forum? Just change the url to read:
http://www.christiananime.net/external.php?forumids=nnnn

where "nnnn" is the id for the forum you want to restrict to. You can find the Forum ID by going to forums -> Main Rollplay (or whatever forum you want). The forum ID is the number after the equal sign. For example:
http://www.christiananime.net/external.php?forumids=42

or (if the above doesn't work):
http://www.christiananime.net/external.php?type=rss&forumids=42

will link just to the main rollplay forum. Bear in mind that unless people are really posting a lot, you may not see much traffic.

You should then see an RSS feed on your bookmarks toolbar. Let me know what you guys think. If you think it's a waste, we may just scrap this eventually. Also, I'm not officially supporting this. If you have questions go ahead and post them. Someone may answer them. However, I'm not going to respond to a deluge of PMs/emails.

Word of advice... don't click on "Open in Tabs"

I don't know much about RSS, but I think this thing has potential

EDIT: Am having no luck withtrying to get a specific forum. Just getting "not supported"

I've got it attached to my personalized Google homepage, and it's working like clockwork. Sweet stuff.

Really Simple Syndication. RSS on CAA will let you view the latest threads without having to load the whole page. If you get this working correctly, you'll get a link on your toolbar that "pops up" to show you the last 15 posts (either overall, or in a specific forum).

Word of advice... don't click on "Open in Tabs"
That's actually a very useful thing for the mods/admins to have so we can view all threads quickly.

EDIT: Am having no luck withtrying to get a specific forum. Just getting "not supported"
Post URL please, and we'll see if we can help out.

That's kinda the idea. Easier on the bandwidth, no?

Certainly. Here's how I would to it:

1. Create a new folder on your bookmarks toolbar.
2. Create a live bookmark for each of the forums you want to hit.
3. Put the live bookmarks in the folder you created at step one.

Attached is a picture of what this would look like.

Can you get it to operate like the "get new" button? That's all I ever use.

Well I couldn't get it to work, which leads me to believe I don't understand Firefox as well as I think I do. On the other hand, I was able to use this to check for the latest posts in the RPG I'm in by dragging the get new address to my shortcut bar

Well, your standard RSS reader doesn't really know how to "login" as you, so I don't think that would be easy. Someone could write a wrapper if they wanted to, but I'm not really all that interested. If people are that interested, you can always:

1. Login.
2. Click on "Get New."

I know, I know, that's Crasy Talk!

It's no loss to me if I can't do it. I'll just continue to do what I've always done.

I think she meant it would be a lot easier to monitor CAA if they only had to click "Get New."

Mith's point is well taken, though -- you'd have to log in for that, and if you were going to do that anyway, you might as well just be logged in all the time and click Get New every so often. It can only generate Get New for a specific user.

Actually AH and CDL, I just meant that we'd have less duplicate threads if people would use the "get new" feature more. ^^;;

I created a Firefox button using the address http://www.christiananime.net/search.php?do=getnew

Now I can just get new from wherever I am. It's not RSS but it seems to save me a lot of time (so long as I don't have Firefox "Clear Private Data"
