Anime Reviews Database goes up

Postby Mithrandir » Sat Jan 17, 2004 12:01 pm

Yeah!!! We've finally got around to migrating the code for the official CAA anime reviews database. You can see the current draft at http://www.christiananime.net/forums/reviews.php (buttons and other links to be added later).

We're still working the bugs out of it, so if you find anything out of the ordinary, please let us know. We're open to suggesstions, provided they don't cause undo stress on the part of our coders.

BTW: This project is not completed, obviously. We're still debating how best to add some additional features to the system.

umm...... I think it had been mentioned before, but why does Voices of a Distant Star have a 21+ age rating?

Looks super oldphil. If we wish to contibute a review does it still just go through any moderator or do we need to send it to a specific someone?

Yup, you can go through anyone, and they'll pm it to someone else if they think they need a second opinion on it. I want to take a moment and make sure everyone knows why we ask you submit a review through us first instead of just posting it: since any review posted here is essentially a reflection of us not only as a staff, but as a ministry and a community, we need to make sure that no one has omitted anything we feel important or added things that were not in there. Basically, to double check and make sure what we're putting out there is the truth. It's just for your protection guys, but I wanted to make sure everyone understood it's not that we don't trust you or your judgement. Not at all. But for our own peace of minds (speaking for the staff as a whole here) and because of the duty we have to God, we've got to make sure it's good to go with us first before it goes out to the community as a whole. Mmkay!

Oh, and guys, encourage your parents to use the database too (if applicable). If a title is unavaliable, they can request titles from us and we'll do our best to scrounge up some research for them so they can be assured of what's in it. We love doing stuff like that.

My Sonic X review (Season 1) is missing from the database.

Seasons 2 and 3 are on there way as the Japanese DVD's are released.

Cool. Looks good. I'm guessing that the database frontend is no longer in Perl, but instead in a PHP port? The bars for ratings look alot better than the colour system or even an icon system (that I don't think ever got used) for the ratings. Also, how many reviews does a review list (e.g. all) go before a new page is started? Wouldn't Nums better be with the hash (#) symbol? There aren't any bugs that I see on the viewing end so far.

Hey, what if a review located there is inaccurate or could be percieved as misleading?

For example, the Trigun review should be a little higher for language in reference to the unedit. While those of us who grew up in the south and west might be a little less offended by one particular word used because it's a common profanity in our culture (LOL, my dad uses it all the time :P. I don't-because I don't use bad language at all, personally-I think it makes one appear uneducated and unintellectual), people from places where that word is considered right up there with the F word might be more offended than us cowpokes ;)

Also, again using the example of the Trigun review, the mention of the infamous episode 18 scene isn't technically the *only* sexual material there. While it's not *extremely* bad and nothing you don't see worse of everyday on American TV, there is episode 6, with fanservice aplenty and a fair share of double entendre humor, and episode 23, where there is an implied sex scene between Wolfwood and Milly. Nothing is shown, but anyone beyond a certain age and ability to comprehend knows that they did it. And anyone under said age is too young to be watching the anime LOL.

Also, I think a review should warn if there is an *inordinate* amount of generally considered "bad" fanfiction or fanart around a series. While, IMHO, the Gundam Wing series can go either way, and the review for it kicking around here somewhere in Anime Reviews (if it's still up) stating it as non-yaoi is good, there needs to be a warning that searching for GW fanfics and fanart online is equivalent to walking right past the "Welcome to Yaoiville" sign. :)

You can find yaoi/yuri/hentai for any title, though. Anyone who's done any fanart searching knows that the potential exists. We can't be responsible for warning others of that, since there is no yaoi in GW.

My point is not to warn for fanworks on just *any* title, but only on titles where there is a massive amount of fanwork of a nature some people might find questionable. I used GW as an example because it's the gold standard for yaoi fandom-I would surmise that 50 percent of the fandom is yaoi-related.

As other examples, I could use Neon Genesis Evangelion and hentai fanart (i.e. a great predominance of NGE fanart is hentai, so that could be an additional caution to NGE's already long list), Pokemon fandom despite Pokemon itself being clean in the US edit (there *are* NC-17 Pokefics).

i second the question why VoDS is 21+. i think it should be (even after adding the blood scenes) around... 16+. perhaps because of the ideas and theme, but hey i'm only 16 and i got it. most around my age should get it. either that or i'm the weird one who grew too old for my own good.

Again, it's not our job to be responsible for reporting what the fans do. And again, people who are searching for fanworks and encounter this thing cannot be surprised since these kinds of horrible things exist for all anime. When people go outside official sites and what they've seen on TV/DVD, there is where the review ends.

At the end of the day, this is an anime reviews database not a fanfic/art review db. When I watch an anime, I do not see the fanart. Perhaps an FAQ item could be added, warning people about dodgy fanwork. However I have noticed that most artists producing yaoi/shounen ai tend to quite clearly warn about this on the entrance page to their site.

There is also the process we'd have to go through of trying to figure out "how bad" an anime is in this respect -- I bet I could type any anime title name + the work "yaoi" into Google and get plenty of results.

I, too, am curious about the 21+ rating for "Voices of A Distant Star," as the review highly recommended it. Typo?

Thanks guys! It's nice to have afirmation on these projects. As for your comments so far:
1. VOADS: According the main database, Ash put that in there, and it really does have an interger value of 21+ in that field. My guess would be typo, or error in the migration of data from point A to point B. I'll see if I can track this one down for you guys.

2. Sonic X: Hmm. Not sure on that one. Looks like everything else migrated OK, though. I'll have to see if I can track this one down too.

Hey, it's good to see that up, though I'm waiting for the computer version. It looks slick, though might I suggest not using green and red for the bars? In my mind, at the very least, it clashes.

o.O Uh... Computer.... Version... I'm confused. Nani...?

As for the bars, that's about as arbitrary a color choice as I could make. It was just a place holder for any actual graphics that SL may want to put in there. If you've got some lying around, PM me - and we'll see if they would fit better. ;)

No, I actually meant "complete version." With all features fully enabled. Actually, I don't really have anything readily availible...
