Shoutbox To Be Closed

Postby Ashley » Fri Nov 12, 2004 3:41 pm

Members of CAA:

The staff and I have reached a hard decision, but after much deliberation we are going to cut the shoutbox sometime this weekend. There are several reasons for this. One, it's not helping our bandwidth situation at all. Secondly, we have noticed a good deal of the activity that goes on there could be accomplished in either an instant messenging program or a chat room.

I realize this will be a blow to many of you but I do hope you will bear with us as we continue to lead this ministry and provide the best environment we can.

EDIT: ShiroiHikari's chat has been put on hiatus. When we find a new applet for CAA's uses, we will inform you, however I've been told there are rumors going around that another chat is being run by CAA members so you might want to check that out too.

I agree, much of the comments made could be done in AIM or chat room programs. Gotta do what you gotta do. If it saves bandwidth, why not? Plus, I've never used it or read the comments anyways.

Would if you don't chat or use AIM? Then what should we do?

*Begins to tear up*
:sniffle:

Well, shoutbox, we've had some good times, you and I...you were where I met my first friend. You helped people with prayer requests. You helped bring people together. And you helped give random glomps to many. I remember the first glomp I got from Sammy, all thanks to you...I remember how you could help people express...little annoyances. Some people just don't send PMs, but they would post how they felt in the shoutbox...and could subsequently be comforted by the rest of CAA. Yes, shoutbox, you were....oh God, I promised myself I wouldn't cry...you were part of the heart of CAA!

GOODBYE, SHOUTBOX! I'LL MISS YOU! *Glomps shoutbox*
 :waah!:

Then I would suggest PMs or email.

*sighs and hugs shoutbox* I remember my first shout...there were fun times to be had in the shoutbox. Laughter, sadness, heartbreak, jubilation...you name it It will sorely be missed.

However.....I don't want you guys ending up liket ansemreport.com and CONSTANTLY being down because you use so much bandwith that you have to pay bills, but the problem is...you don't have money to pay bills, so you're never up.

I would rather not have a shoutbox than to not have CAA.

ok... why don't we just set up an IRC server? It's easy (not to mention free) and millions of people have been using it for years now. It is arguably the best chat program out there. All it requires is mIRC (http://www.mirc.com), which isn't free but the only limitation on it is a nagscreen at start up, which is VERY worth it. Also, if you get a bit more advanced, you can set stuff up like trivia bots, which are a blast to play with people.

Hm. Makes no difference to me whether the shoutbox goes or not.

What a bummer. :( But I think that this is a good decision on your part, given that the chatterbox raises not only bandwidth issues but security ones as well.

Oh well. I hope that we get a chat up soon. =)

I think if we could have a irc channel on the christian-irc network. I think it could replace the shoutbox and add even more functionality and entertainment to the site and its visitors/members.

I'm not sure I'd condone that, actually. IRC is an extremely dangerous place full of hackers and worms--it's very easy to get several viruses without even knowing it. Knowing that, I don't think I'd like to support the IRC networks, even the Christian ones, by having a channel.

I've been on the OneRock.com mIRC for years now, even was an op before college took over, and we never had any of those problems. Kolbenet.net is the server, I believe.

Just my thought.

A picture of the Shoutbox.

Postby Omega Amen » Sun Nov 14, 2004 10:58 am

Well, I suppose it would be useful to take a snapshot of the Shoutbox while it was still here. That way future members will know what the Shoutbox was like. I suppose it could also serve as a memento for those really attached to it.

Here it is.

I'll help in this whatever way I can. I just registered my own url if there needs to be a server I can help with that, too. If I can I'd like to be a op or help in spome other way. Thanks.

As much as we're grateful for people wishing to help us with a theoretical IRC channel, such discussion of it will most likely take place between the moderators after carefully considering all the options. So thank you for the willingness to help; we'll contact you if such is necessary.

hai. Again I emphasize the posibilities in it... the potential. hackers and viruses aren't really an issue on most servers. Take espernet for example... they really crack down on stopping them.
