Propose Tutoring Threads be placed outside General section (Math or anything else)

Postby Omega Amen » Mon Feb 09, 2004 9:45 pm

Hello,

Recently, people have been expressing a desire for help and tutoring on math from fellow CAA members. There is a math thread right now in the General section. Even though Ashley herself gracefully directed people who wanted to just express their feelings on math (usually negative) away from this thread to allow room for people who seriously want help, some people are still making unnecessary comments. (I am not trying to persecute anyone, but tutors need some type of manageable environment to operate.)

I think this is the case because this thread is in the General forum where members "are allowed to talk about anything." I think tutoring threads should not be placed in the General forum because of the conflict generated by the nature of the General forum. Would you please consider moving tutoring threads to a different section or creating a section for tutoring in general? Since we have a computing forum for help in technology, can something similar be done for tutoring in subjects? This would make the tutoring a whole lot easier and manageable for both tutors and members seeking help.

Thank you for your time in considering this proposal.

Volt, while I understand your feelings for a locked forum for tutorials (where you just read how-to's or mini-manual of sorts), my request deals more with a tutoring forum where it is interactive between members who are tutors and members seeking help (whether it be in math or whatever).

For example, a member frustrated on a particular mathematical concept or type of problem could go to this forum, ask the questions, and the tutors can respond with their help without having to deal with members just saying "I cannot stand Math!" or "All I can offer is math angst," or even "I think Math is cooooooool...." (I have never seen that last quote here... yet.)

It is just that I do not feel that a tutoring forum belongs in the General forum. The General forum seems to me a place for members to throw opinions on any subject rather than concentrate on learning a particular concept.

Of course, if members just want to vent their frustration rather than work on their weaknesses (whatever the academic/technical subject), this proposal will become worthless, unfortunately.

Real learning comes by private and corporate experience and mentoring in addition to just researching. Locking it would defeat the purpose, and I second the motion of a separate area for tutoring, as it were.

I agree that a separate section is needed for this. Your could call it the tutorial or tutorials forum, and include photoshop, art, music, software, and programming tutorials as well (assuming there are those that both want and have those skills). It would also hopefully remove repetitive threads that say, "how do I draw a circle in photoshop?" I know for a fact it won't completely remove all non-productive threads, but hopefully with a sticky or two to deter such practices, it would all but eliminate them. Those are my thoughts...what do you all have to say?

Scratch that, I guess there are computing and graphic design forums already. So we could either consolidate them, or create a purely academic thread. A theology thread would be cool too, as sometimes theological debates spring up off-topic. By providing a forum for the express purpose of discussing theology, it's easier to keep the other threads focused as well. Speaking of keeping things focused...
...yeah...
Math rocks!
(Shoulda made my own thread for the theology board thing, sorry, will try to avoid that kind of laziness in the future.)

Saint Kevin, I think the theological debate forum is provided by the theology web link on the top right of the page. The CAA believes, I think, that theological debates get too divisive, nasty, and can be counter-productive to the goals of the CAA. (Of course, an admin/mod can clarify/correct what I just said.)

As for the consolidation issue, yes, that is an issue for the forum leaders to discuss. What I am proposing will probably require some significant reorganization, and I am sure they will take that into account. Of course, if there is no real constant demand for tutoring, this proposal might not even be considered.

Sorry about that. Besides my proposal goes beyond mathematically related subjects. It can encompass other subjects.

I think you're right about the debate forum. I'll check it out. :)
As for encompassing other subjects, I for one have some questions about music creation software, among other things. I could also be a great help in tutoring for HS science, as well as a few college-level courses as well. I think that if the demand is really there, this could eventually grow into something with the potential for evangelism and outreach as well. Not to mention being another way to build up the Christians here.

I think a tutorials forum would be great for the budding writers that are exploding in population on the Writing Forum. If the Mods and Admins create such a forum, I would be overjoyed to make my own Basic Writing tutorial. For the more experienced writers this would serve as a way to help the younger ones to become better writers and maybe learn something new each day.

Thats what the theologyweb link at the top of every page is there for...theological debates can become divisive and that isn't what we want at the site.

well back to the original proposition, I don't see why not. We had some other forums we were planning/thinking about adding too...so hmm, lemme get a confirmation from the other mods and admins but this is a preliminary one-over, so to speak.
