The Chat area is OPEN!

Postby shooraijin » Mon Jul 21, 2003 7:36 pm

Since people are slowly showing up at the chat area, I might as well make the "official announcement" (cleared by djnoz -- hope Ashley doesn't mind me jumping the gun  ).

You can get to it in two ways:

* using Java, by clicking on the "Chat" link above, or going to
http://mud.floodgap.com/chat/

* using Telnet: telnet mud.floodgap.com 6785

* using a standard Telnet or MUD client like GMud, etc.

The chat area is much more than a simple chat server; it's a full online MUD driver. For people who have used a MUD, MUCK, MOO, LP, Diku, etc., before, it will seem very similar, and much of the commands are identical.

If you've never used a MUD or anything like it, there is lots of online help. Just type "help" (no quotes) into the "Do" box in the Java client, or type it at the prompt (in Java or Telnet), and it will tell you what to do next. (The Do! button is just like pressing ENTER on your keyboard, and you can use it in place of the ENTER key anywhere, including when in the PAGER.)

You can find out who's on by typing

who

at any prompt, or (for Java) in the "Do" box if you prefer. If you want to query a particular person, type

who is <name>

like, who is shooraijin

If I'm on *and I'm not idle*, I'd be happy to help you out if you're stuck. Just type

tell shooraijin help!

or some such, and I'll do my best. Otherwise, feel free to PM or AIM me, and I'll answer as soon as I can.

All (or most) of the moderators here are on the chat area with administrator privilege, too.

Enjoy! For people who want to know the technical details, type

help technical

And please type

help rules

The rules are basically the same as here, but please remember you're in an interactive environment now, and you can't take back what you didn't mean to say, right? ...

Please send me any comments or concerns! Hopefully, this can soon get leveraged for regular events, like online Bible studies, fellowships, and so on. More features will be added, too, perhaps even game-like features if people desire.

Quick note (thanks to Technomancer for discovering this) -- if you're using Telnet in Win95/98/ME, make sure you go to Terminal->Preferences and check "Local Echo" so that you can see what you're typing.

The Java client obviously doesn't have this problem, and I don't think Win2K or XP do either (Macs and Unix users don't).

WinXP has this problem. Simply use PuTTY, free for download at:
http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/putty/

It also supports ANSI colouring, which looks very nice.

Yes, PuTTY is a great client. Thanks for the suggestion, MK! There are also various MUD clients like GMud and Pueblo (if it's still around), and these work well, too.

(And thanks for the kind word, Jimmothy :) )

MESSAGE FROM CHATZONE SUPREME ALLIED COMMAND

Now that I have your attention ...

ShiroiHikari, Andyroo and myself were wondering about how to get more people over here last night. There's a few regulars, but certainly no huge influx. Sooooo, we want to know:

* ... if you're having technical problems. Please PM me if so. We're working on a "Frequently Asked Questions" page that should explain how most things work.

* ... what you want to see set up. (Other than hedge mazes, yes, oldphil, I'm working on the virtual object system. ) For example, I'm putting together a "tape recorder" to collect and publish conversations in rooms to the Web, perfect for things like project meetings, as well as a built-in Bible to help things such as online Bible studies.

The chat area is capable of a lot more than just chat, so please submit suggestions and come by and check it out!

That's pretty neat...But whenever I went in nobody was there.....But it's neat-o. The PuTTY thing utterly confuses me, but I downloaded it, and the applet is in color, so I guess it's doing it's thing. Anyway, cool chat.

I think it actually worked for me in Safari, but I'm going to use the terminal, just cause i like it. So, uh, how do you tell who else is on?

Type 'who' at the prompt. (No quotes.)

If you're using the Java applet, you can also type 'who' in the Do! box.

I'm surprised it worked in Safari (it won't work in Camino, IE-Mac or Netscape/Mozilla-Mac). What version of OS X are you using, 10.2.6?

Actually, here's an idea. What do people think about having the introductory page display who's logged on right now? Or would a count of users be better, or just don't do it?

10.2.6

Telling you who's on when you log in would be nice. Is there a command you can type to see who's on?

Just a user count would be good. Like, "There are currently 24 users online." A list of users could get very long.

New changes to the chat area as of this evening:

* Java is officially the connection method supported for the fearful. All the beautiful people are using Telnet, and so should you. There is now a list of Telnet clients, approved by your fellow CAA users, for Windows, Macintosh and Linux/NetBSD/other Un*xy things. (Dangling admins should check their PMs.) Go to the main page at http://mud.floodgap.com/chat/ to see the list.

* There is now a usercount so you can see that I'm always logged in, mostly. Reload every ten seconds just to reassure yourself. If people want a userlist, that's pretty simple to add too.

* There is now an online Bible suitable for online Bible studies (HINT!), and thanks to Ashley and Gypsy for finding a bug in it this morning that is now repaired. Type 'help bible' -- two translations are available.

* There is a now a magic tapedeck that can record conversations in selected rooms, suitable for online Bible studies (HINT!) and meetings (DOUBLE HINT!). The tapedeck is live and posts transcripts to the web server (see http://mud.floodgap.com/chat/recordings/demo.txt for an example a few nights ago) as it is recording. Only admins can turn it on right now, and then only in the fireside room ('go to the fireside room'), but if someone wants to organize a meeting and use the tapedeck to record minutes, please PM me and I'll set you up.

* Environment expansions are coming, because I know oldphil is still desperately wanting to make his hedge maze.

PM me with comments and suggestions.

Thanks for all the work you've done! The online Bible is great. Now we just have to figure out some sort of time to try to hold our first live CAA Bible study.

If people determine a time that works, let me know and I'll make sure everything's set up (as well as attending, of course! :) ).
