Yeah, I asked again, and it seems I did just mishear my friend.

I've watched the first season now, and I think it's definitely a great, entertaining series so far. It's pretty good throughout, and it's definitely awesome for its time, but I'm still hoping for that epic moment/arc that you sometimes see that really convinces you that an anime is pure awesomeness.

I guess I'll have to see the OVAs when I'm done, then. :)
Thor "falls in love" with that one girl after she tries to kill him? At first I asked what the difference between that and Max and Miria falling in love after Max defeats Miria in one-on-one combat, but Meltraedi customs aside, Macross is a very optimistic work. It also has some consistency. DYRL? knows it's a cheesy movie and keeps its tone in line with that, aside from the ocassional dramatic moment that keeps the story somewhat in line. Jyu Oh Sei has some ridiculously stupid things happen and the whole thing is done in this grimdark tone.

Tiz and the Third die completely meaningless deaths that were literally thrown in there. Would FMA be better if it just showed a random scene of a rock falling on Havoc? No, that would be a terrible use of its characters and since Arakawa can write she didn't throw in random crap to screw up her story.

What was the name of that pacifist guy, Jagi? He just randomly becomes a wandering murderer who decides to be good once Thor tries to kill him? Why is he never held responsible by anyone for the hundreds of people on his hands, yet when the one girl dies, suddenly its time to just kill this guy?

Also, the plan that the government had at the end was pretty lolwut? And then the soldiers try to stop Thor, but then literally decide after shooting him to switch sides and save the planet.
This was a really awful crappy show.

Haha, all your points are certainly valid. Whether it was expectations (which were super low since I got it for $3 and a friend had been running a scathing commentary on it), or mood or what, I enjoyed it because it was so bad. I didn't even bother to look for points of sense, or points of depth. Its sheer level of shallow and inconsistency amused me all on its own.

But, to each their own. I like Bleach for the same reasons...

Uh, WOW...

I only just started watching the second season of Rurouni Kenshin, and I already think it far surpasses the first season. I thought of Rurouni Kenshin as nothing but a good anime that was great for its time before, but the second season has all of the emotion, artistic direction, and realism regarding the theme of redemption with a dark past that I was looking for in the first season. Gotta go see what happens next, now.

Kamisama no memochou 1- Eh.... An inferior Gosick. I'm very much not impressed. It doesn't get off to as interesting or solid a start as Gosick.

Blood-C 1 - ...... ><"

Uta no Prince-sama 1 - Oh, oh, oh, no.

Hanasaku Iroha 11-13- I think Ohana's mom can be interpreted as dreadfully selfish, but at the same time... It seems like it's lingering rebellion against her own mother and the harsh strictness of growing up in the hot springs. You would only be doing things for everyone else, not yourself. And she does care about Ohana, even though she can't be a good mother to her.

Eden of the East 9-11: It wasn't the best Anime, but wasn't the worst either. Worth a rental, at least.

Durarara! 2: It wasn't really a *slow* episode, as it revealed some facts about what happened in episode 1. I heard this show gets better as it goes along, so I'll keep holding on.

As do I...so far, I'm kind of leaning on the underwhelmed side. It kind of reminds me of "Paranoia Agent". In any case, I'll stick around for a few more episodes and see if it'll grow on me.

At present, I'm currently watching "Hetalia Axis Powers" Season 2 which I picked up from Best Buy. Completely enjoyable!

And through the wonderful powers of the internet, I've watched Tatami Galaxy episodes 5-9. So close to the end. I'm dying to know how stuff ties together.

I have held off mentioning anything about Baccano! for a while now because I am not at all sure about what I think about it.

On the one hand it is a fantastically well animated show with a unique setting, an unusual story delivery, and massively entertaining characters. It takes multiple groups of homicidal maniacs, gives them weapons and immortality, drops them on a train together, and invites us to watch. How could that not be entertaining?

But on the other hand, that is really the only thing you get while watching: spectacle. It is amusing to watch, but when all the violence and boisterous carnage is done you ask yourself "what do I really know about such and such character?" Then you realize that you don't know much of anything about anyone. Ladd Russo likes killing people who are convinced they won't be killed. Szilard likes power and learning new things by sucking out people's brains. Jaccuzi is easily overwhelmed by emotion and loves Nice. Nice loves explosives and Jaccuzi. Isaac and Miria do whatever the heck they feel like doing and are charismatic and lucky enough to get away with it. Claire likes blood.

In the end these are all one sentence characters. Some even less than that. They have just enough of a signature feature to make them different from the rest, but that is it. To me they didn't feel like people, they felt like plot devices used by the author to bring more crazy to the show. I can just see him thinking "you know what we need? A girl with knives!". And thus another character was born. I know all of these people are probably fleshed out in the novels, but in just 13 episodes I could only see them as facts and features, not people.

In the end, this is probably just a case of over-inflated expectations. Baccano! is fun and entertaining and cool and slick and bloody --certainly enough to make it rank high on my list-- but with all of the hype I expected more than just a flashy "experience". I expected depth, at least a little of it. I don't feel as though I got any. At the end I can remember thinking "that is it? Really? Where is the rest of the story?". All I can say is that I hope there are more seasons of Baccano! in the future. That was one heck of an awesome appetizer, and now I need the entree or I am going home hungry and disappointed.

Finished Durarara!! subed on Crunchy Roll. I really enjoyed it.

I'm keeping up on Blue Exorcist, also on CR. Kind of a slow episode this week, the next one looks better though.

I also watched some more Soul Eater eps.9-17. Great show. the exam ep was particularly fun.

On AS I'm watching:

Bleach
I wish they'd cover more in an episode, it feels like things are just getting started when they end.

Durarara!! (dubed)
2nd ep. When I saw this ep in the sub I was still in the 'who are all these people?' stage, this time it just seems kind of slow. I'm still not sure about the voices, but I am annoyed at how much they've cut the opening and ending.

Fulmetal Alchemist

Winding up for the conclusion, lots of fun and suspense.

Inuyasha

Also watched episode 2 of Durarara!! in dub. It is growing on me a little bit, though I still think Kida and Mikado sound pretty bad. Specifically Kida. Johnny Young Bosch, however, is really good for Izaya I think (and I don't even tend to like Bosch). I need to hear Freeman as Shizuo more, but I'm thinking he'll be good. :)

In regards to what was being discussed earlier in the thread, I like Rurouni Kenshin but it's LOOOOOOOOOOOOONG. And I don't see the point of watching the anime when I'm reading the manga. :P

Anyway, I'm working my way through Kekkaishi. Man, that boy's dumb, and he reminds me of Naruto. But it's a good anime all in all, at least to me.

I've also watched the first three episodes of Miracle Train. o.0 That anime's weiiiiiiird. I'm only continuing with watching it because somebody said that it gets better around episode eight. I hope it does....

Trinity Blood would be awesome if it didn't have the Catholic Church in it. But even then, vampires, vampire hunters, etc., anything vampire, is AWESOME, so therefore, Trinity Blood is awesome. :D

I'm attempting to get into InuYasha again, but upon further thinking and watching, I think I'm going to add it to my drop list on MAL. I looked at episode names, and the name of episode 165 is "The Ultimate Key to Defeating Naraku." I was like "Seriously?!? That guy's still alive? Dude, DIE already!" Aaaand yeah....

I'm also trying to watch Tegami Bachi, but it doesn't really look like it's got much plot. =/ and I'm already on Episode 17! If the plot doesn't show up soon, I'm dropping it.

I'm trying to watch Shugo Chara Party, but those four real like girls at the beginning who dress up as Amulet Heart, Amulet Spade, Amulet Clover, and Amulet Dia are INCREDIBLY annoying. Dude.

Yes I know, I watch many animes at the same time. :P Overkill, I know.

Tegami Bachi is really something that needs to read, as the anime both diverges from the original storyline and has quite a few fillers. It is probably one of the worst adaptations I've seen.

Also, I saw Princess Jellyfish in the past couple days, which was pretty cool. The characters were fun, the jokes were typically pretty funny, the plot was okay. I didn't really like the ending all that much, so you'd think I'd be calling for a second season, but at the moment I have a whole slew of things I'd rather of Brain's Base doing and they appear to be doing that, so I guess it's all good. But yeah, Princess Jellyfish is a decent comedy if you're in the need of such a show.

Watched episode 13 of Steins;Gate. This show, when it started, made me laugh and laugh and laugh. Now, it's become dark and intense, with twists and turns.
In this episode, Okabe keeps trying to save Mayuri, but she dies anyway! Okabe vows to save her, no matter what! LOL, I thought of Syaoran in Tsubasa for a quick second. But I was on the edge of my seat during this whole episode, as well as shedding some tears.
Then, since I am not a Premium Member of CrunchyRoll, I saw a clip of Episode 14. Oh man, so I can't watch it 'till next week. But when I saw the clip...
...I cried throughout the entire clip! No matter how many times he leaped back, Mayuri's fate still was death. But still, he isn't giving up. I honestly think they're going to be the canon couple, in my opinion. They're cute together ^.^
I am so curious to see how that episode plays out next week! This anime, despite ongoing, has already climbed up into my top 5 anime.

With my husband, I recently watched episodes 12 and 13 of Seirei no Moribito. This is a show that we were originally on the fence about, but it keeps getting more interesting, so I'm glad we didn't drop it.

On my own, I've been watching Cowboy Bebop almost daily, and just finished episode 20-that very creepy episode with Pierrot Le Fou. What can I say? This is an awesome series, and all the hype is true! As with Escaflowne, this is another one where I already know more about the ending than I should, but it'll be interesting to see how it all plays out.

I finished Mahou Shoujo Madoka★Magica.

Upon finishing it, I realized that my rating system is very flawed because I was unable to place it anywhere on my list besides the 7/10 category. It deserves at least an 8 if not a 9, but putting it that high on my list would combat my personal enjoyment of the show itself compared to my personal enjoyment of the other anime I've given higher ratings to.

My enjoyment wavered enough throughout Madoka to just make me feel confused inside.

So I'm just going to be a lazy bum and leave it at that.

Oh, Mami was the best character, Homura was pretty good too, and I disliked Kyouko more than Kyubey.

Now I'm done.

Hehe, that's one episode short of where things get interesting... Is it your first time watching through after story?

I finished watching Rurouni Kenshin's first 2 seasons, definitely on my top ten anime list now.

After watching 2 episodes of Fairy Tail and finding myself unable to get interested in it, (although it probably gets really interesting and just starts slowly) I am now watching Naruto Shippuden again, starting by rewatching the episode I left off at a while ago, where Sasuke kills Itachi. What a cliffhanger I left off at. XD

I understand your point, and pretty much agree with it. Baccano! is a little over hyped for me. However many of your issues with this series are corrected in this teams' next anime: Durarara!! in my opinion, it is the better show. No, not perfect but it does have characters with multiple layers that are more sympathetic then those of Baccano!

Also...

Tiger and Bunny - still the best series this summer season.

I started Rurouni Kenshin a few days ago, I'm currently at episode 23.
So far it's really good, it was a little annoying that some episodes that felt like filler.
(Like the episode with the sumo wrestler.)
My favorite character has to be Sanosuke, he's so awesome. xD
(I just finished the episode with the steam train... he was hilarious.)
I really like Kenshin though, Karou and Yahiko are pretty cool. I love it when they fight.
(I really like Megumi too, which surprises me since I didn't like her one bit at first.)
So far I give RK a solid 8/10. =3

D.Gray-man episode 5 - Aw, I wanted the conflict between Allen and Kanda to really come to a head, but
Allen was spared having to make a choice about whether to take the Innocence or not because the demon showed up.
Yet another pacifistic protagonist, I see :P Well, maybe not as extreme as someone like Kenshin or Vash.

I think I like the ending theme now. Not so sure on the opening, though. They're probably going to grow on me before they change (assuming they change since it's so long).

Recent Series completed:

1. Gundam 08th M.S. Team (excellent series)
2. Gundam 0080: War in the Pocket (my least favorite series of the franchise so far, I just felt like it was WAY too much loss-of-innocence)
3. Gundam 0083: Stardust Memory (pretty good)

I am now ready to start watching the Zeta parts of the UC timeline. But that will not be happening for quite some time, as I have a number of other series to finish:

1. Ouran High School Host Club (picked it up this week, 12 eps in already, loving it)
2. Black Lagoon (started in late March, just before I went on anime hiatus)
3. Excel Saga (see reason for #2)
4. Fairy Tail (catch-up, see reason for #2 as well)

And we'll see what happens after that...
There is always hope in the Lord for those who seek it.
Live each day as if it were your first, not your last.
