Hmm. I wouldn't say it was a great movie -- more in that vaguely-defined zone of things I'd recommend to people interested in that kind of thing, but not to general viewers who're just out for any kind of entertainment. Just quite decent.

But yeah, it wouldn't surprise me if that remark was Imagawa holding his work up to very high standards. Dunno.

I finished the 2nd season of Kimi ni Todoke last night. Wow...just wow. I didn't think the show could top itself from last season but it did. This is quality anime right here. I mean the beautiful depiction of friendship and love is the best I have ever seen of any anime. If anyone were to ever ask me what a good romance anime is I would suggest Kimi ni Todoke before any others. I honestly can't praise this show enough.

Started watching Shinryaku! Ika Musume instead of Seitokai no Ichizon with my buddy. There's something addicting about Ika Musume... It's quirky and feels fresh with its beach setting.

In any case, I'm currently doing a dual-marathon of "Neon Genesis Evangelion" with a good friend of mine and a marathon of "Legend of the Mystical Ninja (Ganbare Goemon)". I have to admit, Goemon is one of the coolest old-school anime heroes around in both character design and overall personality.

Finishing up Lovely Complex and GunXSword.
Lets just say my expectations have been wrong in both shows.

Lovely Complex is funnier and better than I thought it would.
and GunXSword is really disappointing me.

That's all.

Panzer World Galient

I honestly didn't think I would type these words: Ryosuke Takahashi, you've let me down. As far as I know, while he has written or helped write several super robot shows such as Gaogaigar and Mahou King Granzort, PWG is the only such show Takahashi has directed. When he's been in "the chair," he has tended to direct grittier fare, i.e. VOTOMS, Gasaraki, Layzner, and Dougram. I'm cool with him directing a show that isn't as dark; I love super robot shows; however, I really do think he dropped the ball with Galient. Of course, all of the blame can't lie at his feet: Souji Yoshikawa, you screwed up too. He wrote the script for Galient, but it's not like he's untalented. He wrote for such shows as VOTOMS, City Hunter, Zambot 3 (which I really like) and Future Boy Conan. Oh well, I guess even Japanese creators you respect are also human.

So, why didn't I like the show? I can sum it up in two words: wasted potential. I could imagine the basic elements of this show put together in a more interesting way, with better execution, and it would be a really good show. You've got mecha in a fantasy style setting, and they aren't just there for no reason. The plot does a good job of explaining why centaur panzer mechs who fire laser beams from their lances exist on a planet in which dudes are still brandishing swords out of necessity.

This is all well and good, but everything moves along REALLY slowly. The fight scenes aren't very interesting. The characters aren't all that cool (why the heck does Windu, a punk kid, have battle-hardened soldiers taking orders from him?!?), and the villain is just...I dunno man, he was an odd one...an enigma in the worst sort of way. Though he ended up having ideals that, again, are potentially interesting, he just never captivated me.

Galient isn't what I'd call a bad show. It doesn't commit any egregious story-telling errors or have super-annoying aspects...it's just truly average. Even a fan of older mecha shows such as myself had a tough time getting through this one.

Norageki!

The title of this one shot, 24 minute OAV translates to "Five Numbers!" Hiroaki Ando makes his directorial debut here, but he has a true talent writing the show in Dai Sato. Sato wrote a whole bunch of stuff that has been popular over here, including: Cowboy Bebop, Ghost in the Shell SAC both 1st and 2nd GIGs, Eden of the East, Ergo Proxy and Samurai Champloo. Knowing that, I went in expecting a certain sort of show, and I thankfully got it.

So here's the setup. Four people wake up in prison to find that their cells are open. They, of course, want to figure out how to escape, though that isn't such an easy prospect. That's about all I can say without risking spoilers. I do want to mention the art style in brief. It is TOTALLY different from the promotional artwork. The characters are all animated in CG, though its heavily cell-shaded so as not to look too PS2 cut-scene (though at times it still does).

Honestly, I need to watch this show again before giving it a score or strongly recommending it. There's a twist ending that I didn't wrap my head around the firs time through. I do think it is worth watching, though. Section 23 has just licensed this show, so maybe I'll wait to rewatch it until the DVD comes out.

I have to ask, but you don't have to answer if you don't want to elaborate: what disappointed you? I only ask because one of the things that really impressed me about this series was the way the last half-dozen episodes or so built into a pretty powerful ending sequence. (OTOH, I admit that Pricilla annoyed me throughout the second half of the series. I really think she was unnecessary as a character.)

Okay, on to what I've been watching . . . I've been trying and not quite succeeding to keep up with the handful of current shows I'm watching. Usagi Drop is adorable, as everyone says. Tiger & Bunny keeps taking interesting directions. I'm too far behind on Blue Exorcist to say much about that, but I like that the last few episodes I've seen were more closely connected than a lot of the earlier ones.

I also keep sporadically watching El Cazador de la Bruja, which is good, but not great. Every so often there's something that makes me cringe. It's that kind of series, I guess.
I get that L.A. is supposed to have a super-creepy relationship with Ellis, and I get that there's supposed to be girl-girl subtext between the main characters, but did they have to make even Ellis's relationship with the doctor seem potentially sexualized/romantic? Really? I like to hope that it was just the fault of the English dub that makes her murmuring "Doctor . . ." seem more than just daughterly . . . but I'm not sure that it is.
I only watched the sub, and it didn't seem like that in Japanese. So I'm betting it's the dub.

Good to know! That would make sense, because it wasn't really the writing that seemed . . . odd . . . but just the delivery of some of the lines in some of the flashbacks. It's entirely possible that I wouldn't have thought anything of it if there weren't already a bit of creepy content in the show (admittedly, I'm mostly thinking of L.A.) I found myself wondering if *all* the relationships in the series were a little warped or something.

Ummm, pretty much everything.
I was hoping that somehow Van would overcome his intense desire for revenge.
I know that was just wishful thinking on my part, and not how reality is.

There was actually quite a bit more fanservice than I was expecting, and I'm not a fan of fanservice at ALL.

The episodes just seemed to drag onnn also. Reminds me of my Yu-Gi-Oh! days, in that aspect. They could have fit more in the episodes, but they just seemed to drag on and on. [More towards the end, then any other time]

And the ending just seemed odd to me. I dunno. It just wasn't what I was expecting and I honestly can't say I really liked it very much at all.

The only character that really kept me watching the show was Wendy. Everyone else just really annoyed the everything out of me.

On a brighter note!
I'm on the 21st episode of Lovely Complex.
Otani & Koizumi forever! <3 They really are adorable.
There is only one character in that show that REALLY annoys me.
and that's the blonde one that's a guy even though he dresses like a girl. He drives me nuts. His voice... ahhH! I think he was meant to be annoying though.
Tetsujin 28: Morning Moon of Midday

Tetsujin 28, or Gigantor as it was once known stateside, was the second anime I ever saw. The 1980 cartoon would air on some obscure channel or other when I got home from attending the 4th grade. This was a remake of the original which aired from 1963 to 1965 and was the first super robot anime ever made. More recently, Yasuhiro Imagawa's 2004 (re?)remake turned the heretofore kids' show into a tragedy-laden tale of Japan rediscovering itself in the years following WWII. Morning Moon of Midday is a movie side-story that spawned from this project and is also directed by Imagawa.

I am an admirer of Imagawa and a fan of everything I've seen from him, but Midday Moon let me down. It gets the somber yet hopeful Tetsujin 28 "feel" spot on, and its music and animation are top quality. The initial setup is also executed fairly well, but the movie falls flat in its denouement. The movie doesn't quite tie together its various threads in a satisfying manner; some character actions feel a bit odd as well.

There are also continuity issues that make it difficult to place the movie within the time-line established by the TV series. I guess this wouldn't normally be something I'd hold against a series, but (1.) it's Imagawa and I expect more from him, (2.) it's Tetsujin 28 and I expect a lot from the franchise, and (3.) you clearly need to have seen the TV series to know who some of these folks are (Dr. Bigfire, for instance).

To be fair to Imagawa, he is aware that the movie isn't up to par and lobbied to shelve the project permanently. Alas, that did not occur.

For me, the film is for Tetsujin completionists and/or Imagawa fanatics only.

Angel's Egg

This is a 1985 film by another director that I admire, Mamoru Oshii. In my opinion, Angel's Egg is the kind of thing that was created for the purpose of making a work of art rather than for putting food on someone's table and this is exceedingly rare for anime. Angel's Egg is far and away Oshii's most experimental movie, and it just might be his best. It is also a a very personal film, so I think would-be interpreters are best served by examining Oshii's beliefs and attitudes.

I'm not going to pretend to know what Angel's Egg is "about" in any complete or concrete sense. Certainly, this is the sort of movie that invites various interpretations. However, there are a couple of things that one should understand before forming detailed opinions on AE. First of all, it does mean something. Because deciphering the significance of symbolism and well-done allegorical storytelling is hard work, I think some people defensively react and say things like, "Meaning is an overrated concept," and, "The iconic imagery doesn't really signify anything; it's just there to displace the viewer." Such a line of thinking may be valid for some movies, but not anything done by Oshii. He is very adamant that every shot of each of his works is pregnant with meaning of some sort.

Second, the Christian symbols and imagery is meant to say something about Christianity and also the spiritual realm/transcendent in general. Whether that's a good-something or a bad-something is up for debate; however, that fact that Oshii himself was a hair's breadth away from entering a Catholic seminary. He is deeply interested in Christianity, and Angel's Egg is not the only film to contain lengthy and/or obscure quotes from scripture and Biblical motifs. Having said all of that, I think that, while the film is the sort of thing that people can take away lots of different things from, to dismiss the Christian symbolism as something that is there just to look cool, a la Eva, would be erroneous.

Now, You can still enjoy the movie without knowing what everything means. I certainly DO NOT grasp the meaning of everything the film. The haunting music, the gorgeous animation, the iconic shots, the atmosphere...there's a LOT to love about the movie that doesn't require a scholarly bent. I do quite like analyzing it, though, and I believe that the experience of critically examining Angel's Egg is a rewarding one.

Crusher Joe: The Movie

When talking about anime that not many people have seen, I often like to find comparables for it. I think that Crusher Joe is an 80s like Sword of the Stranger in many ways. How can a sci-fi action/comedy and a samurai period piece be alike? Well, I think that they each represent the peak of their genre and format. Also, they are both choked full of beautifully animated action.

Like SotS, Crusher Joe squeezes all it can out of its structure, namely a two hour science fiction film that is carnal rather than cerebral. I believe that CJ represents the pinnacle of the anime sci-fi action movie. All of the action sequences, be they space combat, gun fights or chase scenes, are exciting, gorgeous and interestingly choreographed. This is a movie that will entertain you, and that's all it wants to do. Deep characterization? Complex plot? CJ doesn't go there. Instead, we get a string of action set pieces tied together by a solid, if simple, narrative. Basically, Crusher Joe is all about executing an established premise rather than inventing a new one.

It's also pretty 80s-tastic. From the outfits (I NEED a Crusher jacket...like, bad) to the technology to the locales (dat club), CJ definitely has that specifically early 1980s vibe.

I really enjoyed this movie a whole lot and actually recommend it to anime fans of all stripes but especially those who love sci-fi that doesn't get existential. It's the kind of thing I want to watch again ASAP.

Oh, yeah, I can sympathize with this. I was a little disappointed the way that all played out.
I feel like the Claw did need to be killed --there was no other way to contain him-- but I didn't like that Van was killing him out of revenge/hate. I had been expecting him to have some classic realization about the futility of revenge. The closest you could get to that was this hint that he was ultimately killing the Claw out of love of Elena, rather than pure hate, but that's still not a very good motive.
And the ending just seemed odd to me. I dunno. It just wasn't what I was expecting and I honestly can't say I really liked it very much at all.

I don't know if you mean the whole ending or the very last scene of the series or not, but I can sympathize with some of this, too.
I was initially really disappointed with the way that Van just walked off without saying goodby to anyone. My initial reaction was to say "Wow, he really is a cold-hearted jerk after all." And while I liked seeing Van and Wendy reunited, I didn't like the way the last scene threw them together again and just left them staring at each other, without any hint of what happened next. Did they go off on some new adventure? Did Van just eat and then drift off again, or did he settle down in Evergreen? Did he marry Wendy after all, or did he stay single forever out of devotion to Elena?

What I've realized since then is that the writers may very well have deliberately left all that hanging because all of that --future adventures, a potential Van and Wendy relationship, etc.--was part of a different story. Gun X Sword was about saving the world, and it was about Van's revenge and Wendy's coming of age, and those points were resolved. All those "what happened next?" questions COULD have been answered in a sequel, and in fact I got the impression from some things I read that the makers were seriously considering the possibility of a sequel, but there was never enough interest.
Weirdly enough, I actually liked the ending more on rewatching it, because I saw some things that complicated my earlier reaction. For me, though, it was just the last episode that was disappointing, for the reasons listed above. I loved the rest of that whole concluding sequence.

Yeah, there just didn't seem to be any redeeming value in the way they ended it. Usually after a climax of a show, things perk up a bit.
And while they kinda did... it still didn't satisfy.
I honestly liked Wendy & Joshua, more than Wendy & Van for a pairing. Even though I have a huge respect for Wendy in choosing to love a guy that basically lived a good portion of his life out of hateful spite.
And yeah, I thought the Claw should die too, just not with the attitude Van had.
Anyway, I definitely didn't like it enough to watch it again, but it was an interesting idea.

Subtitles have begun appearing for a '81 mecha show called Braiger/Bryger. I've watched the first four episodes. It's about four mercenaries who pilot a car that turns into a spaceship that turns into a giant robot. So far they've been tangling with space organised crime, space conspirators, space corporations, space biker gangs &c, while trying to avoid the bumbling space police. Each of the four episodes I've seen has been pretty self-contained, and each little adventure is fairly light-hearted despite being fairly violent.

I suppose from the more modern things I've seen the closest comparison might be to Outlaw Star, although Bryger has been much more formulaic (and I don't mean that in an entirely negative way).

I don't expect it to turn out great, but it's reasonably entertaining.

Internet was down for a week, but here are a few:

Tiger and Bunny ep 15-20 - ok guys I am in the story.....so time to move it along.

Paprika - I love Kon's work, but this to me seems a bit weak. I bought it and gave it another shot...still not up to his usual storytelling.

Kaiji ep 1-5- yeah this is as awesome as everyone says. So far it is the greatest gambling anime I have ever seen.

Hellsing Ultimate VIII - not bad, wish it was as good as the previous two.

Finished watching all of Part 4 they had up in English of FMA:Brotherhood. Man, it's getting intense! I hope they put Part 5 up soon in English! (I don't mind subs, but when it comes to FMA, I honestly dislike Ed's voice so much I can't watch it >.>)

Also watched episode 18 of Steins;Gate. That was...kinda of weird. Sort of borderline BL, in my opinion.

And I FINALLY got to see Summer Wars. Woot! There were a few things that bothered me though, which kind of disappointed me and ruined the experience a bit, but other than that, it was an excellent film.

Finished the first season of Natsume Yujincho and have started the second. I love this series, and really liked the first season's finale. :3

I've also seen Spice and Wolf up to episode 9. I'm enjoying it so far, but I'm looking forward to when Brain's Base picks it up. Because I've loved every Brain's Base thing I've seen. XD

And I'm still watching various AdultSwim stuff, too.

Natsume is something that has grown on me as I've watched it, and I already thought the first season was pretty awesome.

I've also seen Spice and Wolf up to episode 9. I'm enjoying it so far, but I'm looking forward to when Brain's Base picks it up. Because I've loved every Brain's Base thing I've seen. XD
Coincidentally, that's exactly what my thoughts were.

Perhaps it was too good a film, and some people can't handle the greatest movie ever, I suppose.
Also watched episode 18 of Steins]

Well, sort of? xD Ruka liked him even though he was a guy, and that's why he sent the text and changed his gender. Ruka's feelings wouldn't change even though he changed back. It was rather interesting to see the 'what-if'- IF Ruka had been born Rukako, s/he could have had a relationship with Okabe. And Okabe realizes that, though he's not into guys, and at this point not into Ruka when s/he's any gender. It was nice to see that acknolwedgement of Ruka's feelings.

But it most defintely did not hit anywhere near borderline BL. You want to see borderline BL, watch No. 6.

Well, I'm currently watching Usagi Drop and Blue Exorcist on Crunchyroll. I really like the animation style of Usagi Drop. It's very relaxing!

Blue Exorcist is...ummm...not quite what I had hoped it would be, to be honest. The first couple episodes set it up like it might be a cool action show with an occasional comedic twist. Instead it's a comedic show with an occasional action twist. Still, it's good enough that I've continued it, I guess.

I also decided to start in on the original Dragon Ball again. Never got all the way through it, but I'm going to keep on it until it's over this time. I'm currently finishing up the very first arc with Goku and gang vying with Emperor Pilaf for the Dragon Balls. Fun stuff ^^.

Finished Lovely Complex!
LOVE!

Anyway, I also started School Rumble. Don't ask me why, I tried to watch it once before and I couldn't make it past the first episode. This time I've made it to the 3rd episode. We'll see how long I'll actually watch it this time. Heh-heh.

I watched Redline. It was remarkable. Enough to convince me to buy it.

I'm not sure quite what to make of the film, but I think it's worth seeing if you like racing or robots or very good animation. (Though I should slap a content qualifier on here: it's quite violent, and there's one instance of fairly brief nudity.)

So Soredemo Machi wa Mawatteiru is a decent comedy from last year by Shaft. It's a little more normal than some of their other comedies, like, say, Zetsubo, but it still has the Shinbo references you would expect from a Shaft comedy (Hotori does the Zetsuboshita! a couple times). A lot of people will probably get turned off by the fact that it's about a maid cafe, but it isn't done in a sexual manner, indeed, a lot of the jokes in the first episode is someone being shocked at how it is not the otaku-maid. The uniforms look like they're from Emma rather than He is My Master, barring one brief costume for a hilarious joke. It's a decent watch if you're in the mood for such a show.

My eyeballs are still vibrating. Apart from the surprise boobs, and if finishing a race isn't portrayed as a euphemism for something then I don't know... pretty darn good.

Been watching FMA Brotherhood lately.
I only have 6 episodes left...Holy Crap.
At this point unless the ending is the worst piece of crap I have ever seen then I see no reason to not give this show a 10 and place it as one of my favorite anime of all time.
