I wrote this one about six years ago.

Heavenly Diamonds

Diamonds fall from heaven,
giving down life to the world.
The thunder rolls,
but pay no need.
The world is new again.

Everything has that wet, earthy look,
the look of all things natural and clean.
The refreshing grass, greener than ever,
speaks to us of peace.
These diamonds, gifts from God,
lull us gently to sleep.

No more with "Rain, rain go away..."
Rain, you're welcome every day.
Just make sure that you take turns
And let the sun shine again.

that is very cute
Tis No Fool to lose what he can not keep to gain what he can never lose.
What does it profit a man to gain the World yet lose his soul.

We had our first flurries of the season this week. In my eager anticipation of winter, I decided to post this poem that I wrote three years ago.

Reflections on a Winter's Night

the world is asleep in stillness
the twilight anticipating the dawn
when the sun will spread her colors abroad
from here to hither over yon

in all her majesty
gliding daintily over the snow
the sun will illuminate the world
in her ever graceful glow

but for now the birds will continue to sleep
in a world bathed in starlight
with their heads nestled beneath their wings
as the snow reflects the moonlight

Really? I have always imagined the sun in the sky as female.

Ah, I see. I guess that that has not been as prevalent a connection in my experiences.

I wrote this poem three years ago at a prayer vigil pertaining to the War in Iraq.

In This Time
In this time of war and sorrow, Lord,
Let peace begin with me.
In this time of despair and hatred, Lord,
Let peace begin with me.
In this time of confusion and doubt, Lord,
Let peace begin with me.
In this time when you seem so far away, Lord,
Let peace begin with me.
In this time when innocents die, Lord,
Let peace begin with me.
In this time when we don't know what to pray, Lord,
Let peace begin with me.
Help me to follow Your Will, Lord,
Let peace begin.

That had not occurred to me. I will have to ruminate on that.

This next poem does not have a title, mainly because I haven't been able to think of a good one. I have briefly considered "Assumptions," but I am not sure. This poem was written to challenge assumptions, in addition to jabbing at one of my own dislikes (Direct object: dislikes).

I scurry through the darkness, almost home.
Today was a better day. I found enough food to sate my hunger.
Usually I have to go without.

It’s been hard recently. That is, ever since my partner died.
She was ready to give birth. This was her first time.
We were searching for safe place when she was murdered.

Why did it have to happen?
In that brief moment we darted across a clearing her life was taken.
Just like that. My life was scarred forever.

Why do people hate us?
Just because we’re different?
It’s not our fault that everyone has stereotyped our kind.

They fear us so much! How?
What could we do to them?
We just want to be left alone to do our jobs – but no one appreciates them anyway.

Maybe someday I will try to start a family again.
What if something happened to them too?
I’m torn by instinct and necessity.

I keep going.
Almost home. Almost home. Almost home.
Home, where I will be safe, and alone.

This is a dangerous place to live.
But then again, everywhere is dangerous for us.
There’s nowhere where we are wanted.

I was born who I am.
It’s not my fault.
It’s not my fault I’m a

spider.

Here is another poem. I wrote it somewhere around my freshman year of high school.

Looking Back

I began a journey one day.
I suppose I began on the day I was born,
But I didn’t notice the road I traveled until just recently.
Not too long ago was when I stopped meandering,
And picked up a dead sprint.

So I don’t have much on which to look back.
But every moment I wait,
Because every moment passed is another moment I’ve spent with my Lord.
Every precious little bit he reveals, I joyously grasp,
Anticipating when I shall look back on it with fondness.

I haven’t gotten very far,
The road is difficult,
But with every grace He showers onto me
I run backwards so I can see it more clearly.
I know He won’t let me fall.

I look forward to the day that my journey will be over.
The day when I can look back on His many blessings with a better understanding.
The day when I shall no longer be a child with her petty adventures,
But a seasoned warrior.
Alas, I am not there yet.

Inch by inch,
Millimeter by millimeter,
He reveals Himself to me.
I revel for a moment,
And then take the opportunity to look back at His goodness.

I began a journey one day.
I suppose I began on the day I was born,
But I didn’t notice the road I traveled until just recently.
Not too long ago was when I stopped meandering,
And picked up a dead sprint.

I don’t have much to look back on yet,
But I’m savoring every morsel
Until the day I shall see Him face to face,
And we will look back together,
On a long journey.

I wrote this one in my childhood. I'm not quite pleased with the ending.

I live in the city
Where trees are as rare as emeralds,
Where fresh, green grass is as common as discarded jade.
You won't find flowers here,
any more than you will find rubies, amethyst, or gold.
As for fresh soil, you may as well search for topaz dust.
Everything is cold, indifferent concrete and steel.
The sky is the color of dismal, billowing smoke.
Findinf a patch of blue sky is as common as sapphires on teh housetops.
You won't see milky quartz wafting through the sky; the clouds are a hopeless grey here.
The sun is always hidden,
casting only a despairing, pale light.
You can't see teh stars at night, nor the moon,
Anymore than you would expect to look up and see pearls strewn across the sky.
At night I drift to sleep to tires screeching, angry voices, and flashing neon signs.
I live in the city,
Where trees are as rare as emeralds or silver.

I live in the country,
where trees are precious.
Their bark is of silver, etched with bronze;
their leaves are the most delicate emerald.
The grass is always fresh and green,
like slivers of jade.
There are many flowers here.
The hyacinths are delicately carved amethyst.
Roses sparkle like rubies.
The hollyhocks have the sheen of pink marble.
Irises sparkle like translucent quartz.
Even the uninvited dandelion is as precious as gold.
The rich soil is like topaz dust,
glowing cheerfully.
The sky is a deep sapphire;
the clouds are wisps of milky quartz.
The sun is a great diamond,
sending sparkles of color across the land.
At night, the moon is a giant pearl;
the stars are like its younger brothers and sisters out to play.
At night, the trickling stream,
cricket's chirp,
and nightingale's song lull me to sleep.
I live in the country,
where trees are as precious as silver and emerald.

Strangers are treated with mistrust and prejudice.

Strangers are welcomed and treated as friends.

I'm just one voice,
crying out in a destitute society.
Is there somebody out there to listen?
Will somebody...
Help

I hear it's not the same in the city.
I will go.

Hope!

I like the use of the mineral vs. desirable ecology analogies. However, I think the first (city) section is a bit wordy, so this could use a rewrite for editing.

Please elaborate. Is there a particular part of speech that is in excess, such as adjectives?

Lots of "is" and "as". This makes the text look repetitive, although it's not. Of course, I am a big fan of rather minimalist poetry, so you don't have to take my opionion too seriously. :)

I wrote this one on February 3. It is one of the best poems I have ever written.

Phoenix

Have you inquired recently about that bread you cast?
But did the water come from the clouds.
Oh Mother of Prometheus, I hate to break it to you.
But first you'll have to take out your earplugs.
Abraham's descendents alone already fill the heavens.
What a pleasure to live in the dawn of time when every thought was original.
Old ideas sink into the ever-accumulating dust of history
only to be unwittingly resurrected and employed to polish our over-blowm ego(s).
With the first gasps of each infant, history recycles itself.
Throughout the ages, history recycles itself.
Will the sun rise below us and the wind linger for us?
Perhaps we are just an infinite number of monkeys typing away at an infinite number of typewriters.
Although sometimes the paper doesn't make it all the way around.
If a tree falls in the forest and there's no one there to hear it, does it make a sound?
If a tree falls in the forest but the witnesses' children forget about it, did it ever fall in the first place?
Consider us too busy defining reality to realize that it's not our call anyway.
That's okay, because it's turtles all the way down, anyway.
Chop your kindling.
Dream your dreams.
The turtles endlessly tessellate around and around the fold in the space-time continuum.
Dust to dust.
Ashes to ashes.

Anna, this one is....impressive. I was very suprised by your use of Indian mythology, and find it extremely impressive.

You'll forgive me for not being more verbose, but the fewest words give the highest praise, in my book.
With your doubt, all is comfort
We are all as we appear
No more questions left unanswered
No more wonder, no more fear
Nothing is beauty, nothing's feeling
Blood where there once was a soul
So I ask you, prove yourself
Make me believe that you are whole

In order to express my sincere appreciation I shall also remain laconic: Thank you.

Although I am curious as to why my use of Indian mythology surprised you so much.

It's not something I expect to randomly see on the internet, is all. It's original in the way you used it, while still adhering to the actual idea you took it from.
