My currently unamed story chapter one

Chapter 1
10 Years Later
Spence knew all too well why he was here. Two men, one on each side, half carried, half dragged him down the stone corridor of Lord Robert’s manor. They passed many richly decorated rooms but he barely had a chance to see any of them. The pace the guards set was grueling and he had all he could do to keep from falling onto the stone floor. The last thing he needed was a broken limb. Spence tried to reflect on what friends had told him about the Duke of Bowden. He had never actually been face to face with the duke so he had no idea what to expect. He was pretty sure why he had been summoned. All the people in the Province of Bowden paid heavy taxes to the duke. Either money or goods were expected at certain times each year. Spence had not had enough time to finish harvesting the crops he gave for taxes and his family had only enough money to buy a little food each week. His thoughts were interrupted when they came to a set of oak double doors inlaid with gold. One of the guards rapped sharply on the door. A few seconds passed until one of the doors creaked open and Spence found himself propelled into the room. A large, red carpet covered the expanse of the stone room. Several tapestries depicting ancient battles hung majestically on the walls. He was pulled down to his knees on the plush carpet. He heard a gruff voice say, “Rise,â€

I'm liking this. It will be interesting to see how Christianity plays into the whole thing. I liked the prayer at the end.
