Hm, I thought Mayuri's last trick was acceptable (that is, within the realm of my suspension of disbelief). I suspect that translation would make all the difference here. As I understand it, the drug creates a hyper sensory state in which the individual's mind is so overwhelmed by the information that they are immobilized. That kind of makes sense, which is really all I ask for mainstream shonen.

Orihime's the only female character I've ever really felt wasn't handled very well by the author as she doesn't get to do anything much in Soul Society, gets defeated after that, makes a vow to get stronger, and then gets promptly captured.

Most of the others seem about as strong as you would expect. Nel, Yoroichi, and Soi Fon are strong, and I don't think it's fair to compare vice-captains on down to "captain-class" fighters in most cases.

Kubo Tite has handled his female characters better than Kishimoto at any rate.

I was glad to see the manga-ka didn't just jump into the next fight, and did some cleaning up and character building after; although it consisted of reinforcing the notion that Mayuri more loony than Canadian coinage. (before anyone gets after me, that's a pun)
I wonder how Ishida is coping with Mayuri an as ally?
As for Nemu, I wish she could be stronger, but maybe Mayuri designed her as shield, but not much stronger in the event she decided to rebel to ensure he could subdue her. Besides, if she were an effective design, the Soul Society might make so many copies it creates it's own problems.
I wonder, is Nemu's weakness a carefully worked characteristic designed to fit her neatly into the narrative, or is the manga-ka just lazy?

This arc should be resolving fairly soon. There's only one Captain fight left (and I'm willing to bet Zaraki will do better once he removes his eye patch) and having someone else show up at this point would be just ridiculous.

This falls into the "It probably isn't worth spending any thought on it" category.

I agree on this. The female characters aren't shoved to the side by Ichigo much more than the male ones (excepting the captured female class). Nel did get robbed of her fight, however.

They're kind of working together, given that Mayuri uses Ishida to acquire information and bothered to act as reinforcement. The question is if Ishida wants Mayuri to have anything to do with him.

Yeah, that strikes me as odd too. However... have we seen his hole? They seem to be around the heart, but it would be pretty clever to put an eye patch over it.

That is the big question, yes. If he gets a fight later in the series I might expect it then instead of now, but it could happen. All the more so if he doesn't have a permanent Shikai like Ichigo. Theoretically he'd be strong enoguh with just that, but I have a feeling Bleach is too shonen to have him not go Bankai.

If Noitora actually died without showing his released form, I'd be rather impressed. Most likely this won't happen, though, so we can expect his released form to be about on par with Zaraki sans eyepatch. Alternately, perhaps we'll get a revelation concerning his shikai/bankai.

I agree. Remember last chapter ending with Noitora getting slashed in a way that looked fatal? If Kenpachi is really down I'll be surprised - most likely he's going to reveal a sword release or he'll get up through sheer insanity. He doesn't seem to mind getting cut too badly.

Still, the rule about exponential Espada power seems to be holding. Ichigo wouldn't have stood a chance against Noitora's released form. I wonder what Ulquiorra's will be.
