Alice 19th

Postby Kisa » Thu Mar 25, 2004 5:39 pm

Has anyone read this? I saw a bit of it at the store and it looked pretty good. It is by the same lady (Yu Watase) who did Fushigi Yugi so thats what grabbed me (love FY). Does it have anything bad in it? What exactly is it about? How long of a series?

I just read your Gatekeeper's post and you and me must be on the same Manga frequency. I've read the first tow volumes of Alice the 19th. I was really surprised by how clean it was.

As far as sensuality: At the beginning of volume one, Mayura (I think that's her name-- she's Alice's big sister) comes out of her room in her underwear and a button up shirt. It seems she only decided to button a couple buttons so, if my memory serves me, you can see some clevage.

Also, at one point Alice and Kyou walk into his guardian's restaurant and they make a statement along the lines of "you aren't doing the dirty are you?" Just so you know, they most certainly are not, and they are both embaraced by the assumption.

In the second volume (the first to things were in volume one), a character named Frey is introduced and (I'm trying not to spoil anything) Alice says something like "He has wandering hands". We don't see any evidence of this but he is rather ambitious in his relationship towards Alice and makes alot of unwanted romantic advances.

Also, Frey doesn't have anywhere to stay when he first enters the manga, so he temporarily stays with Kyou and his guardians. At one points, Kyou and Frey bump into eachother in the bath room (they're both wearing towels if I recall) and I think they sorta accidentally kiss. They are both totally grossed out by it. That was my major draw back concerning the series.

This is all I can really remember. Over all, the atmostphere is a little dark, but I think I like the overall message. It enforces the idea that men's hearts are evil, an idea which has been forgotten my our society. Unfortuneately, Viz won't release another volume until November or something, but I suggest this series none the less.

It's been about a month since I read these, but I think I remember most of the objectionable stuff (It was all pretty mild in my mind). I hope this review helps you, and if you have any other questions, ask away. :dizzy:

Wow. . . I totally ignored most of what you asked in the post.

Alright, synopsis: Alice is a high school student who lives in the shadow of her older sister. On her way to school one day, Alice sees a little white rabbit dart out onto a road and stops right in the middle of on coming traffic. Alice darts out to save the bunny and--- Naturally a very attractive guy saves her.

The Bunny gets away from Alice but leaves her with a necklace. Alice puts on teh necklace and discovers that she is a Lotus Master-- a person gifted with abilities to use Lotis words, which are sorta like a certain kind of magic.

After a series of unfortuneate events, Alice's sister Maruya disappears and Alice must use her Lotis words to save her.

This is a VERY rough synopsis and I left out alot of stuff because I don't want to risk spoiling anything. I never read Mysterious Play, but this series is really intelligent and interesting. It's funny because it both denies and reinforces all the things which should happen in a shoujo manga.

I've done a little research and as far as I can tell there's something like 5 volumes. I'm pretty sure it was 5, and Viz will probably do the same.

There. I think that's it. . . My brain hurts.

I loved Alice 19th, but Twilight stole Kyo before I could even read it. :mutter: We have a policy about bishies, and we can't claim the same one, so it's a race to get the best bishie. She got Kyo before I could. Not fair. The archer! I mean, really! Hmph. *crosses arms* Well, Frei is kinda cool too. Ya never know. Maybe I'll get lucky and there'll be a hot villian guy.

I just read the first 2 volumes of this manga last night and I love it so far! I might get the book store to order vol. 3, cause according to Amazon.com it was released in March. Also according to them vol. 4 is supposed to come out in May. I agree that Kyo is definitely very bishie, but I like Frey too!(he makes me laugh) ^_^ Does anyone know how many volumes there actually are in this series?

Wow, Blue elf, where were all us Alice the 19th addicts when you asked this question? From what I know and based on the cover scans I've seen-- there are 4. I have absolutely no idea they are planning on wrapping it up in 4 volumes (I've read upto three and I'm clueless how it's gonna be done in so little time)

And if Alice and Kyo don't get together-- I'm hunting Yuu Watase down with my paint ball gun!!!!!!!
Every year in Uganda, innumerable children simply. . . disappear. These children all stolen under the cover of darkness from their homes and impressed into the guerilla armies of the LRA [Lord's Resistance Army]. In the deserts of Uganda, they are forced to witness the mindless slaughter of other children until they themselves can do nothing but kill. Kill. These children, generally ranging from ages 5-12, are brainwashed into murdering in the name of the resistance and into stealing other children from their beds to suffer the same fate.

Because of this genocide of innocence, hundred and hundreds of children live every night sleeping in public places miles from their homes, because they know that if the do not-- they will disappear. They will become just another number in this genocide to which the international community has chosen to turn a blind eye. They will become, in affect, invisible-- Invisible Children.

But there are those who are trying to fight against this slaughter of Uganda's children. They fight to protect these "invisible children." I've got volume 3 now and they just had to end it like that....*glares at book* I was looking at some Alice 19th sites and I think I remember seeing that it was either 7 or 8 volumes. I also kinda got spoiled on some facts about Frey's past, but oh well. O_o I also spoiled myself on what happened for a few chaps. after vol. 3. Now, I guess I'll just wait till the English graphic novels come out and try not to read ahead anymore. Well, unless there's another particularly annoying cliffhanger....no, must...resist! ^^; I wish they'd release 'em faster though.*sighs*

Yeah, I was just looking at an Alice sight and I saw a similar number of volumes. Seven, I thought. And I'm both relieved and bugged! Why won't VIZ POST A RELEASE SCHEDULE!!!! Tokyopop has a release schedule for the next nine months! Ahhh!!! Yeah, the ending for volume 3 was lousy, especially considering the title of the next volume-- unrequited(sp?) love? She'd better not. . . uh, unrequite, or I'll come to her house and spluck hairs out of her head.

How long have they put between volumes? Three, four months?! Makes me want to SCREAMMMMMMMMMMM!!!!!!

Well,
The bible says that there's not a righteous man on earth, "not one". People are evil. I can elaborate more if need be. I was just saying that I liked the part in this series about Alice having to battle the evils of the heart. I believe there's a certain allegorical value in this manga, for we who are christians also battle against our sin (we have Jesus-- an advantage Alice didn't have, though.)

I know!!! I-- I-- I love him!!!!! I just don't know what Alice is gonna do. I mean, just turn around right after, er, what happened at the end of three, and say "Well, I'll see you tommorrow." She can't say what we all want her to say! Poor darling.

Oh, well, this is why we all read Shoujo manga, so we can yell and the main character and tell her how obvious the answer to her problem is, while we sit on our sofa and think how glad we are that we don't have to be her.
