Free MMO suggestions?

Postby Mister Frodo » Sun Mar 29, 2009 11:03 pm

Does anyone have any suggestions for good, free MMOs?

My friend and I are trying to find one we can play together, and so far we've come up fairly empty-handed. We've been playing Runes of Magic, which is fairly fun, but neither of us is a big fan of it and we're trying to find a new game.

So far we've tried 12Sky, Last Chaos, Shaiya, and Perfect World. 12Sky and Shaiya didn't work on my friend's computer (otherwise we probably would have played Shaiya), neither of us liked Last Chaos, and Perfect World was apparently dangerous to my friend's computer, so we both deleted it. He probably has more games that he's ruled out that I don't know about; he's played more MMOs than I have.

If anyone could help us find a good, free MMO, it would be greatly appreciated! :D Since we play mostly fantasy MMOs, my friend wanted to find something that was sci-fi or a different genre, so something non-fantasy would be preferred. However, any good MMO would be nice.

Thanks in advance, and God bless!

I'm currently using Shin Megami Tensei: Imagine Online myself. It's a mix of science fiction and supernatural, a large portion of the game being controlling legendary creatures from human mythology in a bleak dystopian future. Not the most cheerful MMO, but fun if you can chat things up with a couple friends over Skype.

Maybe check out Ace Online:

http://ace.subagames.com/

I used to play it with some friends back when it was still called Space Cowboy (it was hosted by another company then). Think of it like Star Fox (minus the furries), but online. You control a fighter ship, and they have several kinds of ships, each with their own specialties (bombers, armored ships, maneuverable fighters, etc).

And one of the big pluses about this game is the fact that it's PvP-centric (unless they've changed it). Once you hit level 10 or 15, you're offered a choice between two factions, and once you choose, you're thrown into an all-out turf war with the other faction. Enemies will raid your territory, and it's your job to gun them down before they get too far.

All in all, it was an excellent game, but you really need to have friends playing it or it isn't any fun (which is why I had to quit).

Games Campus (http://www.gamescampus.com/) also offers a good number of MMO's that are all free to play, although theirs are different from your traditional MMO in that not all of them are PvM grindfests. They offer games like an online golf game (it's more fun than you might think), an online Baseball game, and an online billiards game. Don't knock them before you try them - the games aren't actually that bad.

It's not sci-fi but Mabinogi is good and free! And there's also Bots!! which is a pretty fun combat game and quite obviously involves robots. You play it over the internet with each other but it is only combat and it's a little buggy...

Hmm This seems to be my field of expertise.

Pros/Cons:

Mabinogi:Very fun but grinding can get tiring. Plenty of quests but can definitely get boring. Another thing is that the game is based around the rescue of a goddess. I personally don't play any game that include anything religious because I believe it's wrong to partake in that kind of thing.

Drift City: Great game if you like driving. The members sometimes aren't too helpful. Loaded with people from other countries. Sometimes, you have to lvl several times before you get another quest and this in itself can get very tiring.

There: Very boring. Bad graphics. Pointless.

Bots: Very simple and loaded with ads. Can be fun but it has a very limited amount of choices for your robot unless you are willing to pay for extra items.

Project Torque: Very realistic racing but unfortunately now includes many scantily clad women throughout the game menus and loading screens. No boost or items or things like that.

Audition:Great game overall. Needs a larger choice of Christian music but still a fun game. Great for large groups of friends to play together. Many great items available with in-game currency.

Flyff: I haven't played this in a while but it was boring when I played it. Took VERY long amounts of dedicated time to level and got quite tiring. Game is based on magic and a world created by several other gods.

Project Powder: Amazing snow boarding game. Needs more levels and characters but this will take a while as the game is still in open-beta. Very fun for the first few months before you tire of the repeated environments.

Maplestory: Overall great game. MANY things to do at all times with endless quests in a 2d world. Unfortunately includes magic within the game but the game itself is fun. You can spend hours at a time playing this game without tiring.

TalesRunner: Game with a great concept. Personally, my current favorite. I play this game almost every day. You create a character and then race along in your favorite story book worlds hence the title "Tales" Runner. Many techniques discovered by players that you can use to go faster and save boost. This game itself is a foot racing game, one of the few. I thought it would be a bore when I started but I was totally wrong.

Ask me later because there are others I have forgotten.

I think you just killed 99% of the fantasy market.

Flyff: I haven't played this in a while but it was boring when I played it. Took VERY long amounts of dedicated time to level and got quite tiring. Game is based on magic and a world created by several other gods.

It doesn't take long to level in Fly. I actually play Flyff, and it's ridiculously easy to level and doesn't take that long.

Maplestory: Overall great game. MANY things to do at all times with endless quests in a 2d world. Unfortunately includes magic within the game but the game itself is fun. You can spend hours at a time playing this game without tiring.

I can't agree with this at all. Unless you play a private server, Maple Story is probably the worst MMORPG I've ever played. Sure, the game offers a high degree of customization for your characters - if you're willing to re-buy all your pretty equipment every month with real-life money. Not to mention that hackers dominate Maple Story, primarily because the grinding is tedious.

I'm gonna throw in another recommendation for Mabinogi.

Ragnarok Online now has a legit free server as well, so I'll throw that recommendation out there too.

Gonna have to say that I side with everdred on Maplestory. I personally felt that La Tale was a better game in the same style.

Also, the golf game everdred is referring to over at GamesCampus is Shot Online, which ... is a remarkably good simulation of golf. IF you enjoy golf games at all, you should check it out. It's got a pretty easy learning curve, but it remains pretty difficult until you gain a few levels just because your character can't do much. If you need some help with getting started and I have the time (I'm relatively busy these days though...), I could probably jump on and team up with you to give you pointers and get you some EXP.

Triez, do you play on Vallar or Hollid server? I have a level 48 Semi-pro on Vallar.

Vallar. I haven't played in several months -- I'm in the low 40s myself -- I think 44.

Thanks for the suggestions, guys! I'm gonna run some of these by my friend and see what he thinks. I'll let you know if we pick an MMO or if we're still searching.

I played Shin Megami Tensei: Imagine a little bit. It didn't exactly grab me, but I only played it for fifteen minutes or so. I might give it another try by myself. My friend wasn't sure if his parents would like him playing it, so he didn't install it.

Yeah I know about the fantasy thing. Sadly, lol.

Btw, are you guys SERIOUSLY playing a game about DEMONS AND DEVILS? That's freakin terrible! xD

And I didn't really remember the Flyff thing. It's been a while.

And ur right about Maple Story. It's better on a private server.

Actually it's not terrible, it's pretty awesome. I mean I wouldn't want to live in a world without Doom, or the Dragon Quest games, or Final Fantasy Tactics, or Earthbound, or Disgaea.

I wouldn't mind. Honestly, sure it's just a game, but that's pretty bad :/

I don't like not being able to have fantasy. Without magic, fantasy is the middle ages. [sarcasm]And we all know how fun it would be to play THAT.[/sarcasm] Seriously, it's much more fun to use Earth shattering spells to destroy a monster that could take over the universe with ultimate power than it is to clang clang with dull swords in a realistic world.

I fail to see how it is bad. In fact, it's pretty good. Since Final Fantasy Tactics is, in my opinion, the best video game ever. Nothing will ever top it, unless they make a direct sequel (none of this Tactics Advance stuff, which although it was good, doesn't come close to the original).

I heard you the first time.

If it's any consolation, the word "Devil" is used as a catch-all term referring to generally any mythological being, ranging from ancient deities, local folklore, and classic English literature even. I'd hesitate to read the same connotation from the English usage into the Japanese intent.

But it doesn't matter because Alice in Wonderland is an awesome summon.

Seriously, though, if you axe the better portion of the fantasy genre, there's not a whole lot of options left out there.

I play Guild Wars a lot. You do have to buy the game in the initial purchase, but there's no monthly fee. It's not nearly as rich as WoW or LOTR Online, but it's a good game, nonetheless. I have Prophecies and Factions.
"People who sin say this: that they had to, to survive. People who sin say this: that it's too late now to stop. The shadow called Sin dogs them steadily from behind, silently, without a word. Remorse and Agony are repeated, only to end up at Despair in the end. But the sinners just don't know, that if they'd only turn around, there is a light there, a light which keeps shining on them ever so warmly. A light that will never fade." -- Vash the Stampede

There's still Ultima Online, too. It's not as pretty as some of its successors, but it can still be fun, and there are free servers around.

id discovered what demons actually look like and do:Image

Usaully demons are villainous in video games, hence why they get call demons and get hacked down with a sword or chainsaw.

Anyway, you might try Silk Road Online. I haven't played it in a long while, since it gives my computer the BSoD.

So, my friend and I tried out all the suggestions in the thread and... none of them really worked. Either my friend vetoed them outright or they didn't work on his computer, so we're back to searching for now. If you guys have any more suggestions, I'd really appreciate them! Thanks for all the suggestions so far. I'll update you guys if anything changes.

Maybe your friend needs to lower his standards. I hate to say it, but free MMO's are not usually up to par with pay-to-play ones.

I havn't presonally played it,but I usually study at a computer lab at college, and a friend of mine introduced me to Perfect World . The only reason I havn't played it yet is cause I really need to study, and have some other things, but it looks neat, and the gameplay is also nice. lol
If I don't get bored just watching him play that means that the game has to be neat in some way.
The server with the most updates is the malaysia one. There is a new one "PW International",but since it's new it doesn't have everything that the Malaysia server does. Either way, you'll find people from everywere. Anyways!!! Just read the reviews on it if you want, and see if you,and your friend like it.

If you could give an idea as to which ones he vetoed right out, and the reasons why, we could probably give more advice.

Yeah, my friend can have pretty high standards. He has played a lot of MMOs, including some really good ones, so he's not easily impressed.

We were going to play Perfect World, but my friend's computer marked it as dangerous, so he deleted it after his computer got a virus from a separate download (he was afraid Perfect World would wreck his computer). So we're probably not going back to Perfect World. Thanks for the suggestion, though!

TriezGamer wrote:If you could give an idea as to which ones he vetoed right out, and the reasons why, we could probably give more advice.

Yeah, I'm sorry about that. My post was a bit ambiguous over which ones he vetoed outright and why.

Basically, he vetoed everything except Ace Online, and for these reasons:

Mabinogi: He didn't like the video he saw on the game's website. Apparently the art style/graphics weren't his thing.

Drift City and Project Torque: Neither he nor I really want to play a racing MMO, so we both vetoed these.

Bots: He wasn't really interested in the game.

Audition: He didn't want to play a music MMO, and I didn't really want to either.

Flyff: He had played this game and disliked it, so we vetoed it.

Project Powder: My friend wasn't very interested in playing a snowboarding MMO, and neither was I.

Maplestory: My friend's looking for a 3D game to play, so we ruled this one out.

TalesRunner: I can't remember the exact reason for why we vetoed this game. I don't think my friend was crazy on the concept, but I don't remember if we actually outright vetoed this or not.

My apologies if I left out any other suggestions. I'd already discussed Shin Megami Tensei: Imagine with him, and he wasn't crazy about it; I've played it a bit since then and may continue playing it, so he told me if I find something amazing about it, I should let him know. We tried Ace Online, but it didn't work on his computer.

I'm sorry for how picky we're being with our choices. XD We'd probably be less picky if it wasn't for the fact that most of the games we find won't work on my friend's computer (and yet games like Warhammer Online, World of Warcraft, and City of Heroes will). We may just go back to playing City of Heroes again (I have the money to afford the subscription now; I just have to see if my friend does as well). Thanks again for all your suggestions.
