Since I tend to choose games rarely, I think my general answer to the question would be, "As long as sustainable." If a 30 hour game would still be fun at 40 hours, why not? Naturally, different gamers will feel differently about each game, which is where optional content comes in. I will always have a place in my heart for massive epics.

On the other hand, some games are more like short stories: they want to do one thing and do it perfectly. In that case, short is completely fine (as in the oft-cited example Portal).

I used to want the most hours for my money. Neverwinter Nights was cool because you could download thousands of hours worth of free mods for it. Now that I have more responsibilities, I find myself appreciating shorter games. I would say that 15-20 hours seems to be the sweet spot for most games. Of course, if it is still fun I will still play.
