Postby ChristianKitsune » Sun Feb 28, 2010 12:33 am

I haven't seen a thread about this yet, hope there isn't one! >_<

Trailer: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XY8amUImEu0&feature=pyv&ad=4474710802&kw=

Jackie Chan is taking on the mentor role! AW!

It looks cute, but there is no one who can replace Mr. Miyagi! :waah!:

Part of me is a little bit interested in seeing it; it doesn't look too bad!

The other part of me is pretty sure Pat Morita > Jackie Chan, but I'm willing to give him a chance. XD

The last part of me is saying, "hey! They used Futura as the font in this trailer!"

And now I'm gonna go sleep and hopefully not dream of letters. XD

This is the worst movie, ever. I don't say that lightly. I seriously mean this is the worst movie, EVER.

I will tell you why.

One, "Karate Kid." Karate is Japanese. This movie is about a kid who moves to China. KARATE IS JAPANESE. NOT CHINESE. They can't even get the title right.

Two. Jackie Chan is in it. "Oh but Jackie Chan is cool!" you say. No, no he isn't. Any person who thinks that Chinese people should be slaves to the government and that freedom is dangerous, is not a cool person. Thus, any movie starring Jackie Chan is immediately crap.

Three. Remember how Mr. Miyagi told Daniel that karate wasn't to fight? That you learn karate so that you may never use it? How fighting wasn't cool? Oh right, this remake says "Hey learn karate so you can beat the crap out of people!" In other words, it is in direct opposition to the spirit of the first movie. That makes it terrible.

But the fourth, the fourth is the worst. The biggest insult of all. In the original movie, there's a scene where Mr. Miyagi catches a fly with chopsticks. Everyone remember that scene? It was awesome! Then Daniel says, "Wouldn't a flyswatter be quicker?" Mr. Miyagi responds, "Man who catch fly with chopsticks accomplish anything."

So guess what Jackie Chan's character does in this movie? He hits a fly...with a flyswatter. That is the last straw. The director of this movie PURPOSELY and WILLFULLY took the original movie and laughed as he defecated on it.

That is why this is the worst movie ever.

I mean...I just thought it looked like a fun movie. XD

And I thought the flyswatter scene was kind of funny because of that. XD But I didn't like, ADORE the old Karate Kid movies, I just thought they were fun. XD So maybe that's why I don't think this one looks like a complete abomination. XD

I get what you're saying! XD.

And its weird because its like Jackie Chan's character tells the kid that he will learn Kung Fu. Isn't there a huge difference between Karate and Kung Fu? >_<

Why not call it The Kung Fu Kid That would fix A LOT of the problems!

I DID think it was weird when he killed the fly with a flyswatter... O_o

And..Jackie REALLY thinks that?! Woah, changes my entire idea of the guy... >_<

That...sounds like a logical fallacy to me. "Chan says bad things, therefore any of his works are bad."
You can enjoy someone's work or acknowledge that someone is talented even if their views are strange or you don't agree with them. Case in point: Tom Cruise's scientology, Richard Wagner's anti-semitism, etc.

I'll watch it for the same reason I watched "The Spy Next Door." I like Jackie Chan (even if he's said something incredibly stupid) and the movie isn't really trying to be a direct remake of the original Karate Kid. Comparisons are going to be inevitable between these two movies however if you make a movie which is more of a spiritual successor then an carbon copy remake, there won't be nearly as many comparisons being made. It does seem like they are trying to make a spiritual successor here though...again why call it Karate Kid? Kung Fu Kid (as was suggested by CK) would have kept a connection with the original movies and would fix the various other issues that come with naming it "Karate Kid."

With all this being said, even before I saw the trailer I knew this movie wasn't going to live up to the original in anyway. Jackie Chan's best years as a filmmaker and Martial Arts star are behind him and he hasn't released a really great movie in quite a few years. This does make him one of the better candidates (or even the best candidate) to play the "Mr. Miyagi" character however it also means that you should remove any expectations of the old, non-wire using Jackie Chan who did incredible stunts that made your jaw drop.

Eh, given that most people (certainly most US citizens) generally call all martial arts "karate" I don't think that title is any big deal. The original title was Kung-fu Kid, but that honestly doesn't have the same marketing appeal.

Maybe this movie will be good, and will stay true to the original, or maybe it won't. The trailer wasn't indicative either way. The one thing that I do know is that old Pat Morita beating up a gang of fit older High Schoolers is much more impressive than Jackie Chan taking on a group of Jr. Highers.

Also, I'm pretty sure that the flyswatter scene is to help illustrate the difference between the two mentors, not to disrespect the original. Believe it or not, most directors respect those that came before them in a series.

Even if this director (Harald Zwart) did try to crap on John G. Avildsen, he would be the butt of the joke. It's tough to follow the act of someone who directed the Oscar winning Rocky. Especially when the best you have is Pink Panther 2.

If it was us, what did that make Me? After all, I'm one of Us. I must be. I've certainly never thought of myself as one of Them. No one ever thinks of themselves as one of Them. We're always one of Us. It's Them that do the bad things."

Also, I'm at least seventy-five percent certain that they're calling it Karate Kid right now just to let people know it's a remake, but that the actual title is going to be Kung-Fu kid.
