See: great actions scenes + burning passion to carry it the rest of the way.

But, to your point, the over-the-topness kind of defines the show. I just watched episode 8...a little too serious for my liking.

Now, that show is a totally different kind of ridiculous than Sengoku Basara, and, for the record, I felt the same way about it, Nate. That's two things we agree on...scary stuff.

Hoshizora Kiseki was pretty bad. The story itself was really bland, the direction was choppy, and the writing was like an awkward visual novel. The animation was particularly atrocious, the art was kind of off, and the music was cheap. Doesn't come anywhere near to matching the other 30 minute OVAs I've seen.

Can't wait for the second boxset to finish off Season 1! (So far, my fave episode is "Full Metal vs. Flame" 'cause it was HILARIOUS!).

Omgosh yes!!! All of us at my house loved that episode <3
Haha, same with the mom thing too!! My mom watched the first two to see if it was ok, and ended up getting addicted herself! ^^

As for me, I'm almost done with Naruto (Pleeeeeeease, just let it be over T.T ) Nothing against the series; it has its good points, but I've simply watched too much after already having lost interest :shake: But I have an unfortunate obsession with finishing everything I start, and I have a sister who is still very much interested...

Heroman - Complete

Tons of fun, this show. Very pretty, slickly animated. Got a lot more interesting/unpredictable after the first story arc. Great ending. I can honest say that I enjoyed this show each week, though anyone who does not adore mecha, especially mecha for young boys, might be harder to please. I look forward to season two! Yup, you heard, right =).

Rainbow - Complete

What began as a brutal, raw story of a group of reformatory inmates settled into a kind of seinen slice of life/drama. The cast struggles to adapt to a post-war world that beats them down nearly as much as the reformatory wardens. Deep characterization drives the show. The writers know how to string you along and wring every bit of emotion/interest they can out of the various situations the boys run into as they grow up post-prison. More affectingly than any Shonen Jump show could, Rainbow shows the value of friendships...even when one member of a friendship dies, their influence can still be felt for years.

EDIT: Oh, and I forgot to mention: Legends of the Dark Kings - Complete

What a violent little treat! The story of the Hokuto no Ken's antagonist's rise to power. FotNS fans will gobble it up, but it does stand well enough on its own. Oh, and Raoh owns the lot of you.

Up through:

Clannad ~After Story~ - episode 10 -- it's sweet. I tend to not feel inclined to watch it until I finally /do/ but I strongly believe that is more of a not wanting it to end avoidance, not a bored avoidance. Clannad is positively squee-worthy, and gives me fuzzies and makes me cry all at once. Good thing to watch after everyone is asleep in bed so no one will walk in on me crying my eyes out.

Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann episode 22 -- okay. I'm sorry. Really, I am. I tried. Hard. But I could barely STAND the first 2/3 of this. The only redeeming factor was Simon, and now and then, Yoko. Kamina annoyed me to no end. But!! This final 1/3 where it is actually more...science fiction-y beyond "giant robots", is somewhat enjoyable. (and I adore science fiction) Though I'll plop down on the side of evil and good all at once and say: Go Simon and Viral.

Kino's Journey episode 13 -- COMPLETE --- much love to Kino, Hermes and the whole show. It is a new favorite, and although I have to analyze the philosophy to death to see what conflicts Biblically and what does not...for the most part it seemed like a "world without God" about as naked as could be (yes, I know I am reading into this, so what. :P ). And even though that wasn't the intention, I found it an interesting perspective all the same. ^_^

Up to epi. 4 on of Giant Killing, epi. 2 of Digimon 01 (I can't helps it), epi. 18 for Skip Beat, and epi. 7 of Love*Com.

I watched episode 39 of Kaitou Saint Tail, and to celebrate the only 3 Oct. 10 I'll be alive for, I watched the first episode of Brotherhood dubbed in English. Pretty good; as I expected, the people who were lackluster in the beginning of the first series have grown in their abilities over the years and are starting this one off strong. Maxey Whitehead will take some getting used to, but I can already tell that I'll end up loving her Al as much as the previous one.

I also watched the newest Brotherhood OVA, about Mustang's experiences in Ishbal. Pretty sweet!

Shakugan no Shana S 04 was the second boring half to the story started from the last boring episode. The thing is that this one is the last of the OVA episodes and had an after-credits thing which may indicate that the beginning of the next season may make me rage.

Unlimited Blade Works is the movie that adapts the route of the same name from Fate/stay night. Unfortunately, it's produced by Deen again, which means that they attempted to stuff an eight hour story into just over 90 minutes. It seems they had enough money to make pretty good fight scenes and add the most minimal of glue in between those scenes. It's kind of the Advent Children of F/sn.

Giant Killing - Complete

This show really filled a nice void for me, as there aren't a ton of sports anime streaming at the moment. This is also the only soccer anime legally available to stream. As I am an absolute fool for soccer; I ate the show up. It could have been total dross, and I would have still watched it. But, you know what? It is actually an objectively good show apart from the sporting aspect of it (as many sports anime are). Who isn't a sucker for the tag-rag bunch of losers becoming a force to be reckoned with plot line? Each of the guys, young and old, prodigiously talented and average journeymen, learned something important about themselves and got to contribute something to a winning cause. The coach, who is quite amusing, is the archetypal character who acts odd/indifferent to the players/fans concerns and has the players train in these strange ways, but really he is a master motivator and skilled sports psychologist who knows how to get his players ready and get the best out of them. And the fans. The fans. You can't help but get caught up in the fans' hopes, fears and reactions. Excellent stuff.

Sengoku Basara Two - Complete

Unfortunately, this season didn't live up to the first go-round. I will say this first: I liked this season a lot. It had all the SenBas hallmarks: ridiculous feats, hot-blooded men screaming battle cries (or just each others' names) at one another, flashy fights and Engrish. But, this season, it felt like the staff tried to do too much. So much time was spent on build-up and on giving new cast members the spotlight, that by the end (when the old stalwarts have to step in and save the day) I.G. was really rushing things. Some will think I exaggerate, but I felt that if, given the time, all the fighting at the end could have become an FMA Brotherhood-esque sequence of endgame combat episodes...if they could afford to give each fight its due. Granted this series' conflicts wouldn't have had the emotional power of FMA:B, but the SenBas final battles could have achieved something approximate to the epic bombast of FMA:B's final battles. Again, though, I did like the show and would watch a third season if they give it another go.

Finally got to watching the Durarara!! special episode, 12.5... The characters in DRRR are so cool! I miss that show, I wish there was more... And I was happy that it played a little on my favorite shippings. :D It was an enjoyable special, but for some reason I couldn't help but feel that it dragged on (maybe because of the ridiculous amount of commercials Crunchyroll stuffed into the 24 minute episode...)

Watched Angelic Layer Volume 4 a couple days ago. I've gotta say, the series is starting to grow on me. It didn't really capture me at first (not sure why...the dub? the humor? idk...), but now the story is starting to get deeper and more interesting. I'm starting to realized that I actually kinda like the show, and I feel that I'm going to like it even more VERY soon. :D

Trying My-Hime. It's a bit of a mixed-bag. The concept, characters and story are interesting but the magical girl and shoujo scenes confuse me and the sexual humour and silly scenes are distracting. Who is the audience for this series?

Don't quote me on this, but I think I remember reading somewhere that it's supposed to be a shonen magical girl show, so teenage boys.

Tegami Bachi 19-25

Anyone who has talked to me much about anime and manga knows I have a huge love for Tegami Bachi. The thread I made for it died with eight replies, at least one of which is mine. But that's for the manga.

So how good is Tegami Bachi the anime then?

The Good:The music is definitely one of the highlights of this show, and it is wonderful. This is a series I would not mind having the OST for. Also, obviously I like the manga so I enjoy the plot and characters of this show. It has a good atmosphere with almost kind of a fairy tale charm to it, like the way the man-made star is drawn, really tells a lot about this series.

The Bad:First, we have some issues with pacing. The manga is still pretty young, with chapter 42 having come out days ago, and this ended months ago. So, to avoid overtaking the manga and ending with a solid place to make it not feel like it cut off in the middle of the story, it had a fair amount of fillers. While the fillers aren't as bad as say, Bleach, it still kind of hurts the pacing to go through six or seven episodes with no plot to them. The problem is that 13 episodes wouldn't have been enough, since the number of plot relevant episodes are too high to shorten it to a single season but too many to make a 25 episode anime out of. Another is the animation, which isn't terrible but this definitely wasn't Soul Eater. Even at it's best, it still wasn't anything great. Also, if you've looked into this series you've probably heard about the bad CG.

All in all, I liked it, it was good, but definitely had some flaws. 7/10, on the lower end of that.

It's shonen. Magical girl is not really an exclusive genre for shoujo series, at least not anymore. Also a good indicator of its target audience is the fact that the manga adaptation ran in Shonen Champion.

I just started Ouran High School Host Club yesterday. I really like it! I didn't expect it to be so funny. I really only started watching it because Vic Mignogna does one of the main characters. Tamaki just screams Vic. It's the perfect role. I mean it was the perfect choice for the dubbers to cast him.

I can't believe I just found out about Tamayura. It's an OVA that's a slice of life show about a girl who's really into photography. It's been pretty good and it feels a lot like Sketchbook. I really like the OP and ED singles too (by Sakamoto Maaya and Nakajima Megumi, respectively; coincidentally, it's the same setup as with Kobato).

I finished Saint Tail! I actually liked the last couple of episodes quite a bit; the romance was nice (this coming from a girl practically hardened against the whole shoujo genre).
