Favorite Horror Manga!

Postby Atria35 » Sat Oct 29, 2011 3:15 pm

Since we have a thread like this over in the anime section, I think we deserve one here as well. What are your favorite horror manga?

Ibitsu tops my list. It's terrifying in all the right was.
Bizenghast isn't half bad, with some genuinely scary moments and imagery.
Ghost Hunt since it mirrors the anime very closely.
Higurashi because it goes into so much more detail than the anime- in fact, important pieces of information that you don't get in the anime appear here. Wonderful!
Petshop of Horrors has a Twilight-Zone-esque quality to it that I really enjoy.
Dragon Head- While I dislike how it ended, it does semi-horror very well.
Ito Junji collection- Downright freaky most of the time, and that's a good thing when it comes to horror!

Higurashi When They Cry.

This manga is just executed so BRILLIANTLY! The first volume of the question arc introduces you to the characters, causing you to be attached to them. But then, everything goes crazy in the second volume. And, of course, you have the Answer Arcs to "check your answers" to see if you've solved the mystery!

Geh, I still need to get my hands on some of those answers arcs so I can check mine XD!! Sometimes, Higurashi can be confusing, but that's the whole point.

I just read Ibitsu.

Good grief, that was the scariest thing I have ever read. The picture in the anime-horror thread is entirely accurate.

I haven't read any yet, sadly. :( When They Cry and The Drifting Classroom are at the very top of my list. In fact, I think I'll look to see if I can order some of them on the cheap right now.

Drifting Classroom! That's on my to-read list. Can't wait. It's a longer series, though, so it's been pushed back until I have more time for it.

That manga took no prisoners.
I kept hoping there'd be a hero in the nick of time, or that maybe the Lolita girl could be redeemed.

But, no.
Or, rather, it did.

I'm glad I wasn't eating when I read that, since I would have choked from laughter.

Bravo, Ich.

However, the best, in my opinion, is not based on plot, art, or characters, but presentation in this case.

But do you feel it's the best horror manga? The best horror manga you've read- period- or have you only read Junji Ito?

I Love King of Thorn. That had an excellent story, and a sort of romance that wasn't sappy at all! That is rare!

Higurashi When They Cry, hands down for me. As well as the webmanga "The Midnight Tea Party". To think....how still frames can almost make you jump!
