Tales of Earthsea was much better than I expected it to be, which is not to say it was actually good. Prince's motives were pretty dumb and it needed to be much better paced and also actually explain things, but ultimately, it's pretty uninteresting, even though it could have been a good movie if Miyazaki the Elder had actually helped his son, rather than just letting him loose, even though that's not how he rose up. I enjoyed it, though. I like crappy fantasy.

I really wasn't impressed by it. I've read the books and I feel that, on the whole, Tales From Earthsea is wasted potential. I think Ursula LeGuin said it best when she told Goro "It's not my story. It's your movie."
And what a terrible movie. It seems as if it is trying to say something, but is not sure how to say it.

Anyway, just started Slayers Revolution. Here's where FUNimation had to start from scratch with some new voices. Not sure what to think yet.

Just recently finished watching Chrono Crusades and Noir. Don't think they are based off of a manga, but I'm currently watching Spirited Away and Kiki's Delivery Service.

Kiki's and Spirited Away are indeed anime-original.

Took a break from NGE to watch part of the Macross Frontier movie False Songstress. For some reason, I'm finding it hard to actually sit down and watch this in one go.

Once you do, I don't think you'll have the same issue with Wings of Goodbye.

Well, it's not like Goro had any help or education barring watching movies himself. I'd actually say that the film showed a lot of promise, even if it was not a good movie, so I am guessing that now that Miyazaki the Elder is trying to stop being an awful father we could see some good things out of Goro yet.

Oh yeah, I am fully aware of how he is going to make a glorious return. The news came shortly after I finished Samurai Champloo, actually. Have you seen Macross Plus?

Anyways, I have spent the last four or so months working on the by-now legendary 110 OVA series, Legend of the Galactic Heroes. This is a show often praised as the greatest anime of all time, and it has not disappointed.

LOGH is a show about the conflict between democracy and autocracy. I'm guessing that if I told you it was a show about an up-and-rising star in the fleet of the waning Free Planets Alliance and his battle against a corrupt Empire and its new brilliant admiral, it wouldn't seem particularly special. It might throw in some humanized villains and corrupt people on the Alliance side to add some "depth", but you would probably guess it would be a Star Wars-like adventure as good and evil clash. What makes LOGH different is that it is not a show about a protagonist clashing against his antagonist. Both Yang Wenli and Reinhard von Lohenngram can be thought of as the protagonist, but the conflict is ultimately less about them, but their beliefs. Both have legitimate reasons to believe in the form of government they fight for, and rather than show one as better than the other, LOGH shows the viewer the benefits and drawbacks of both and let's them decide which is superior.

If this sounds dry and boring, LOGH is anything but. You have Reinhard's awesome crew of admirals like Mittermeyer or Mueller, who are all really interesting characters and great to follow. Then you have Yang's crew, who follows him out of "whim and foppery" and are the biggest bros you could ever have. LOGH takes itself seriously, but it doesn't try to be boring, and I can think of episodes where I was rolling on the floor laughing or being like THAT'S AWESOME.

Speaking of battles, the combat in LOGH is great. On the ground side, you've got your standard laser shooting, but really, if you have a gun, you're probably not a match for one of the numerous axe-wielding characters. On the space side, you've got the various admirals having to defeat each other strategically, and not in a lolDeath Note way of declaring things just because they're smart. Things like stamina, fleet movements, and morale are all deciding factors in how a battle will turn out. One battle, I kid you not, is a showdown between two death stars. You can't deny that that is awesome.

To my shame, I have to confess I only watched this once on TV, when I was sick and half asleep... I remember fragments from the first episode, but that's it. I keep forgetting I need to really watch it some day.

Also, I'm really interested in LOGH after the Doctor's review, but I don't really see myself being capable of acquiring that amount of anime any soon :/

I tried the first episode of Fist of the North Star. I'm not sure I have the stamina to work through the whole thing, though.

It is definitely an uneven series, so there are chunks that you can bypass. If you're interested, I can track down that "watch/do not watch" list that's out there. The parts that are good, however, are fantastically brilliant.

Perhaps you might want to give the pentalogy a shot before you plunge into the TV series?

I got started on Dennou Coil, courtesy of the public library. The character design is not my favourite but the story seems very intriguing. Reminds me a lot of the awesome Koji Morimoto's (my favourite underrated director!) short "Beyond" from the Animatrix compilation.

I don't mean to discourage you at all; as you can tell from my MAL, I freaking love that show and that universe. I just didn't want a potential fan to get too intimidated/discouraged before actually seeing the best parts of the story (which the pentology gives you. I do prefer the TV series to it, however. Stick with it and you will be rewarded! The first part (Hokuto no Ken is a five part story) is the most tedious. Once you get character introductions and back story, there is a whole bunch of filler-like stuff (which is its own sort of fun, to be sure) until the fight with Shin. From there it maintains a pretty consistent level of good until Rei and then Raoh enter the fray. Then it gets amazing.

I'm American and have consistently spelled like an Australian since I was seven. I have no clue why. But I think it looks more refined!

NGE 14- I had to go back and rewatch the whole beginning of the second half with Rei, because it's just so darn trippy. I like the vibe, but there's definitely some serious stuff in there masked with the at-peace or even joyful stuff.
