Bakuman vol.'s 13-14: These were pretty awesome.
The whole deal in #13 with all the one shots was hilarious; and the thing with Hiramaru and Aoki towards the end was pretty unexpected, but quite heartwarming.

As for #14, that new mangaka is a really interesting character, and he throws a pretty delicious twist into the works. (I do really feel for his poor editor, Kosugi, though-- I hope things work out well for him! Oh, and I hope things work out well for Shun, too!)
In other words, both of these were excellent as usual, and I can't wait for the next volume! :thumb:

Blast you! I only finished the 12th volume, and was rolling around on my bed laughing for a while, and still haven't completely calmed down even though it's two hours after I finished it. That is my favorite series of all time, I have no doubts.

D.Gray-man chapters 48-54

It looks like I'm finally past the part covered by the first season of the anime! :jump: I'm noticing some slight changes in the way Hoshino-san is drawing Allen - possibly showing some aging, like in FMA?

Silver Spoon chapter 52

Nineteen, Twenty-One - Oh, just break my heart into little bits of happiness! This was just a fantastic little romane about a girl who's trying to find her place in life after losing two years of her life in a traffic accident (coma), and finding love and purpose over some lovely little kitties and a guy that also likes to feed them! :-^o^-:

Silver Spoon 52 - And just when I thought this might turn into a sort-of romance story. *sigh*
I do hope Hatchiken can make it to that date. Or at least a make-up date later.
I wonder what happened to him, though. He was stretching before he fell/passed out/was incapacitated, so maybe he pulled his back? Or passed out from overwork/lack of sleep/low blood sugar? Or...

Like several of those above me :), I also just read Gin no Saji, a.k.a. Silver Spoon, chapter 52. And yeah, it was getting kinda obvious that Hachiken was really overworking himself, so I suppose a collapse was pretty inevitable in the end; but while I have no doubt that he'll be okay, it was a bit concerning.
Though earlier it was great to see him get up the courage to ask Aki to go somewhere with him, and insist that it just be the two of them (and LOL, the page with his mental reaction to her accepting was hilarious ); plus it was also great to see Aki's roommates break her cluelessness right away and make her understand that Hachiken likes her as more than a friend, and meant it as a real date (rather than having said realization get dragged out like some manga do :P). And I very much agree with Vii in hoping that they still go on that date once he recovers. :)
Also, @Atria: Oh my gosh, a heartwarming romance + taking care of cats?! *runs off to MAL to add to to-read list immediately :thumb:* ...Ooh, and it's a manhwa, too! I look forward to reading this!

I know, right?! And at only 1 volume, I'm all over it. I hope you like it as much as I did!

Nineteen, Twenty-One vol. 1 (complete): Okay, so not only is it a sweet, natural, and heartwarming romance + taking care of cats + manhwa, it's also in beautiful full color! :jump: Plus, the insights about animals are spot-on, and both the cats and the main characters are utterly adorable.

^ You're welcome! ^.^

Went ahead and got through a few more one-shots:
A, A' - I constantly forget about Moto Hagio's ability to convey a whole lot in a short space. All three shorts in this one centered around identity in some way, the first by adressing cloning and whether a person generated that was really is the same as their predecessor, the second via how people 'resonate' together (though a much more obvious metaphor) and expectations of people vs reality, and the third through sexual identity. Very bittersweet.

Lying Mii-kin and Broken Maa-chan - This is dark. It's really all about the lies we tell ourselves or let take over our lives (as evidenced by the subtitle "Precious Lies"). This story twists on itself because it's constantly misleading the reader (yep, a super-literal version of the title), and very slowly revealing what happened to the characters and what was happening with the current murders in a very deliberate, thought-out manner. Fantastic.

So Negima! went full shounen as I was promised and it's now a very engrossing read that has kept me up for several nights. Thanks blkmage!

I also have been reading Petshop of Horrors. Unlike the name and the short anime version suggests, this is not a horror manga (they had to go and handpick some of the goriest stories for the anime to make it live to its name.) It is an episodic story about supernatural creatures and the way they reveal something about human nature when they interact with people; some stories are heartwarming and moving, others end bad. There also a background mystery that slowly is unveiled as the main characters grow.

Despite its classical 90's shoujo art (that is to say, not very polished,) abundant silliness and its light shounen-ai touches, I'd say this manga is more of a josei story than a shoujo. It's like a more adult, more philosophical, more thematically tight (if less plot-driven) version of XXXholic and as such I gladly recommend it to anyone who liked that manga.

Hana-Kimi vol 1-2:
A girl named Mizuki travels to Japan to attend the school of her high-jumping idol. There is just one problem, it's an all boys school! Mizuki dresses as a boy and silliness follows.
I borrowed these from a friend who owns the series. I don't think I'll continue it. I just felt like the plot and the characters had been done before.

Marmalade Boy vol.'s 1-8 (complete): Man, what a soap opera. Now, that in and of itself isn't necessarily a bad thing-- in fact, I didn't really mind that aspect in particular (...well, I mean, except in the case of the parents of at least three of the characters, of course-- they were really messed up, LOL ). No, the main issues that I had with this series were that the story was paced far too fast and the characters were not fleshed out anywhere near enough to make anything believable. In fact, the characters almost always seemed both a bit distant and a bit flat-- plus you quite often had to be *told* their feelings, rather than actually seeing them develop. :forehead: Had those issues been remedied, this series could likely have been quite a bit better than it was; as it stands, though, it was very mediocre. :shake: Oh well. :P

You may be proud of having withstood that art (or rather, lack thereof.) I'm still scarred after randomly stumbling upon it in one of my earliest forages into manga when my innocent belief that everything Japanese was awesome and pleasant to the eye was ripped violently from my psyche. An important and accurate lesson, but one I'd rather have learned in a gentler way.

Vampire Knight volumes 9 and 10. This is definitely not one of my favorites.
The Story of Saiunkoku 3&4. These were so funny that I'm reading them again!
HunterxHunter 6,7,& 8. I love Gon and his honesty! There's no guile in that character, which is highly refreshing after Vampire kinght where everyone has a hidden agenda.
Hikaru No Go 19,20,&21. I love this series! All the different go games have such tension and atmosphere, and you can totally tell the artist is the same for Death Note.
Godchild 1. Still deciding.
Fushigi Yugi. Still deciding
Bleach 39, 40, & 41. Ichigo and ulquiora finally got to go all out!

Gin no Saji, a.k.a. Silver Spoon, chapter 53:
Yep-- as expected, Hachiken still needed to be taken in, but it was just overwork, so that's good. It was neat to see just how much everyone usually relied on him, and how his attitude helped keep things running even when he wasn't there. The little scene with Aki and Ayame was pretty awesome, too. :) And LOL, great cliffhanger!
Tonari no Kaibutsu-kun chapter 33:
ROTFL, I totally did not expect Yamaken to run, too-- that was hilarious!! And that was a surprisingly wise little comment from Yuuzan to Shizuku about choices, as well. Oh, and LOL, Haru making Shizuku lean on him at the end was so cute. Looking forward to the next chapter, as always!
And Kieli novel #7:
I knew it! I knew it! All the way back when Harvey's core first cracked, I knew that it was eventually going to place a normal human time limit on his lifespan; and that fact was finally confirmed in this book. Now, if he can just survive whatever's going to happen in the capitol...

Speaking of, that was a pretty unexpected revelation in regards to Kieli's past, there. :pikka: Now, as the story is about to move into its two-part conclusion, I can think of only two likely endings for the main characters-- and while I'd be very happy with one of them (:jump:), I'd be pretty displeased with the other (:comp:), LOL. So I really, really hope this ends well...!
My current list is
Bleach 40, 41, and 42. I'm just waiting for Ichigo to get back in the game. I really hate it when they have these long battles with characters I don't even care about!
Arate the Legend 1. I'm going to like this series, I can already tell. I hope they show more of the Arata in modern Japan!
Zatch Ball 3. I hate the art for some characters, but the story is so good that I can't put it down. Sometimes I feel really sorry for Zatch.
Godchild 2,3, and 6. My library didn't have a couple of volumes. this is another one where I don't really like the art, but that keeps me in such suspense that I have to keep reading.
Fushigi Yugi. I just want to finish this one so I can move on to better and cleaner things.
Fruits Basket 1. I liked the anime, so I'm trying the books.
Hikaru No Go 22 and 23. I AM SAD!!!! I never wanted this series to end, although it did so very nicely with the bonus story!
HunterXHunter 8. I still love Gon, and his dad's not bad either, I can't wait for the next volume.

Gin no Saji, a.k.a. Silver Spoon, chapter 54:
Man, Hachiken's father is pretty unpleasant, isn't he? :shady: Hope that visit didn't scar him too much.
Otomen vol. 13: Interestingly enough, I couldn't really get into the first 3 chapters of this volume for some reason; but the last chapter was back to the good old Otomen cuteness I enjoy, so that made up for it. :)

And Natsume's Book Of Friends vol. 12: This really is a pretty impressive series; its quality is so consistently good-- and this volume is, of course, no exception. :thumb:

I started Mars. That has got to be one of the cutest, least shallow romances I've ever seen in a manga.
I also finished Godchild, which was horrible and confusing right up until the end.
I also finished King of Thorns. That was fun, with some pretty great plot twists. I love how the relationship between Marco and Kasumi turned out!

Arisa vol. 9: SPOILER: Highlight text to read: So, by the end of this volume Tsubasa finally knows who the King really is (which is good, since those of us reading the story already knew ;)). Anyway, there was some interesting stuff here. I liked the fact that Arisa's amnesia was fake (because that's a nice little twist to an old trope), and I'm curious as to whether Kudo is actually dead or not. :pikka: I'm also curious as to what the King's endgame is, and whether Arisa's "new" personality truly is/was her real one.

Bakuman vol. 15: Excellent stuff, as always. SPOILER: Highlight text to read: Ah, so it wasn't quite over yet with Nanamine. :) I'm glad they took a bit more time to resolve that. And I think I mentioned this last time, but I love the new editor Kosugi, and I loved Kosugi's attitude change/personal growth throughout all this, too. :) Oh, and the stuff in the middle of the volume was quite good as well (especially when Hiramaru showed up ); and the copycat plot at the end was also great (+ its resolution was perfect!). As usual, I'm definitely looking forward to the next volume! :thumb:

And finally, Zetsuen no Tempest, chapters 1-18 so far: Well, I can see why this got an anime. :) Fast-paced, lots of action, some fairly striking visual themes at times, interesting characters/plot, and you're pretty much thrown right into it from the start (i.e., things are gradually explained throughout the story, rather than having a lot of explanation in the beginning... not that I think either way is better than the other, but I can see why that style would work well in the format of an anime). Plus, having read and enjoyed both Spiral: The Bonds Of Reasoning and The Record Of A Fallen Vampire, I know how Shirodaira-sensei writes, and he's great at reversals and twists (as well as setting up really intricate plans and/or mind/logic games by characters). So it's pretty much to be expected that there's a whole lot more to what's really going on, and what everyone's personalities and motives really are, than has been revealed so far-- SPOILER: Highlight text to read: even with the numerous reversals and twists that have already occurred!

...Other thoughts of note:

"You sent my hat flying." (I don't know why that line amused me so much, but it did, LOL.)

All of the main characters (alive or dead) are pretty interesting, since they're all fairly multilayered (and extremely smart in several cases, too); plus, you're still not quite sure what really was or is up with a few of them.

Holy crap, that thing with the skull (and what follows from it) was a MASSIVE twist, and I did NOT see that coming! :wow!: And its eventual explanations (yes, there's more than one!) made for some really great wrinkles in the plot.

I also like where this looks like it's going with the beginning of the new arc here.
Now, whether the anime will be a good adaptation of this or not remains to be seen; however, I'm quite enjoying this manga, and very much looking forward to more! :thumb:

I am currently reading
Mars 1&2. THis is one of the cutest and least shallow romances I've ever read, and may be the one that convinces my mom that manga isn't just flivilous mush.
Naruto 43. Fianlly, the truth is out.
Vampire knight 14. It's getting interesting now, after all it made me go through? Not fair.
Godchild 8. It is finished.
Arata 3 & 4. This one is good! I can't wait for the next volume, but we could do without all the sex stuff please.
Rise of the nura clan 1-3. He is awesome when he transforms, and even cooler when he's standing up to other yokai.
King of Thorn 3-6. THat was my first survival manga, and I'm super curious to see what happened after that!

Eagle: The Making of an Asian-American President v 1-5- WHOA. THIS IS SO COOL. First off, there's a whole lot of personal things going on between a Japanese reporter who is curious about the father he never met (and his mother dies right from the beginning), and is called to cover the election of an Asian man who's running for President. He's allowed to write whatever he wants as long as it's published after the election.

He finds out the candidate is his father, and goes on a journey to find out what happened and his personal history. The Vietnam War plays strongly into what's happening and the mentality of what's going on. It also fantastically delves into what it takes to win an election, and I'm totally drawn in by it! Definitely an awesome read.

Galaxy Express 999 v. 6. A couple planets explode, and Matsumoto either didn't know or chose to ignore the fact that gravity follows an inverse-square law. He also recycled some of his previously-used themes and motifs, which is not terribly impressive.

GE999 v. 7: The conductor gets some character development (which surprised me, because I didn't think he was actually going to have any sort of backstory) and is pretty much awesome in that particular chapter. This volume is also memorable in that its final story ended on an unbelievably cruel and hopeless note. In terms of doing horrible things to your characters, 5 cm/s does not come anywhere close to this.

GE999 v. 8: Found myself feeling sorry for amoebas. The whole volume was permeated by a vaguely sad tone, but other than that it was not very memorable.

March Story v. 1: a Korean Manwha with a pleasingly gothic atmosphere and cool character designs. It’s about a character who goes around exterminating ils, which are evil spirits that inhabit exquisitely-crafted objects. Obviously the concept is not unique, but the artwork and general aesthetic are above-average, and the story is not bad so far. Content warning: it does contain occasional nudity and gore.

Mugen Spiral v. 1-2 (complete): A girl who is the best spiritualist in Japan seals a demon into cat form and then takes him in as a cat. However, he also turns into human form quite frequently (and also demon form, when she releases him, usually to battle against other demons). Humorous antics ensue. Felt rather incomplete since there were several plot elements that weren't resolved, like the male lead's desire to have the female lead heal his father, and also whatever happened to his younger brother? Actually, it seems like the only plot element that got resolved was the romance, although there were various other things going on. At least the two leads were pretty equal in terms of power, which appeals to me.
Let others believe in the God who brings men to trial and judges them. I shall cling to the God who resurrects the dead.

Assassination Classroom is fantastic. An overpowered alien threatens to destroy the earth in a year. But, before he does that, he offers to teach a high school class and allows them to attempt to assassinate him during that time. Also, he's a really good teacher.

D.Gray-man chapters 71-74
You can find out things about the past that you never knew. And from what you've learned, you may see some things differently in the present. You're the one that changes. Not the past.

"There's a difference between maliciously offending somebody - on purpose - and somebody being offended by...truth. If you're offended by the truth, that's your problem. I have no obligation to not offend you if I'm speaking the truth. The truth is supposed to offend you; that's how you know you don't got it."
