Need serious Hellboy movie advice

Postby Crossdive » Sat Mar 12, 2005 4:54 pm

is this movie acceptable for Christians, it sounds a bit blasphemous in some things, but a Christian from another forum told me that in the end
Hellboy embraces God
but some stuff sounds like it just blurs the lines of good and evil to much, for example, Hellboy is part demon (i believe it was part, rather than full) and has some sort of occult symbol on one of his hands, but several people from this other forum (at least one of which was a Christian) told me it was really good and doesn't blaspheme God at all and I should see it. :?:

I really did not see anything horrible about the film. Its fantasy. So if your the kind of person who can seperate fantasy from reality..then its fine. If you come home and suddenly want to grown horns and embrace the power of darkness...perhaps you should not see the film. *laughs* I really enjoyed the film...and can not for the life of me think of anything really offensive about the movie.

I really liked the movie. Some parts made the hairs on my neck stand up, but the rest of it was great. I also watched it with my mom, (The woman who needed some convincing to see Bruce Almighty, because she thought it looks 'blasphemous') and she liked the ending.

I really like when he did get that cross on his hand and embraced Christianity. ^_^

Eh, I don't think demons can do that.

Don't sweat it Crossdrive. It's merely fantasy.

Geez..it was just a movie. It was not a Christian movie...Hellboy does not rush to an alter and get saved....It was simply popcorn entertainment...don't make it somthing its not. The point was.
He did not go through with ending the world, he just saved the girl and had a nice happy ending. I don't see how he embraced Christianity...nor do I really care...since its a movie...not real
If you feel that God would allow you to see it, see it. With some things you have to see it to judge it.

The real lesson that is hammered home in Hellboy is it doesnt matter where you came from but how you live your life and what decisions you make.

Don't worry too much about it Crossdive.
Its a great movie, in my pov, but in terms of biblical truths, its absolute bull. Its not offencive and he crucifix is used only as a symbol of friendship between Hellboy and his 'father', its got nothing to do with religion as such (thats what Mike and Del Toro said in the commentary).

Go watch it. He is a really cool character.

Here's the plugged in review for Hellboy. (Warning: read the violence content for plugged in reviews with a grain of salt, they tend to make things sound far worse than they really are. :stressed: )

Anyway, Hellboy was one of my favorite movies, though (in my opinion) the title makes it sound worse than it really is.

(A note that I thought I'd add, is that Hellboy is found by the professor while he's still a baby, therefore he didn't really have time to choose to rebel against God, before he (Hellboy) was raised by the good guy's. It's a theologically false idea, but it's only a story right?)

The movie almost has a christian message. The whole movie is about not letting your origins direct you life. I really liked the movie.
"Relax, turn around, and take my hand." Tool
"Heir Kommt Die Sonne." Rammestein
"Now the world is gone, I'm just one. Oh please God help me." Metallica
"Are You Ready?!?" KoRn
"All and all your just another brick in the wall." Pink Floyd.

saw it today and LOVED it, whether the messages were intended or not, I really enjoyed it and found it very symbolic, highly reccomended. :D

thanks for the advice all ;)

btw, I hate the over-strict nature of http://www.pluggedinonline.com, the only review that ever aided me at all for that site and that seemed level-headed was when I was tempted in terms of Blade (a vampire-slayer Marvel character). though ultimately, only by making a mistake or clinging to God was my struggle really ever resolved, that was simply more and more proof on why not to see it. ;)

the leading actor is Ron Perlman. ;) I know him well for superhero related roles such as:

Hellboy (movie)
Clayface (Batman the Animated Series)
Slade (Teen Titans)
and soon to be Killer Croc (The Batman)

From what I have heard, Perlman is one of those actors who has little small parts in EVERYTHING. He's done a lot of movies, but Hellboy was his first lead role.

Ron has had a leading role coming for a long time. I am glad to see him getting a little respect for the years of work he has done. (First time I ever saw him was on a tv verson of the show Magnificent seven)

If Nightcrawler from X-Men doesn't offend you (he's in your signature), then Hellboy probably won't either.

I probably won't ever see it, not because it's "offensive" but because the idea of the main character having gas caps on his forehead is a bit odd. (I'm just not interested.)
Heart of Sword's Rhapsody

Money, get away
Get a good job with good pay and you're okay
And all and all you're just another brick in the wall
Shoutin’ in the street gonna take on the world some day
But Bismallah will not let me go
Because I'll see you on the dark side of the moon

Tommy used to work on the docks
Union's been on strike
Bright eyes burning like fire
And exposing every weakness
However carefully hidden by the kids

Who will love a little Sparrow
Who's traveled far and cries for rest
Spare him his life from this monstrosity

I've seen a million faces and I've rocked them all
And if the band youre in starts playing different tunes
We will we will rock you
We will we will rock you!

I just rewatched this movie with my parents and siblings, and I must say, I missed alot of bad stuff before. I felt much more spiritually uncomfortable with it as a film, and especially that part near the end where Rasputin says something like 'I looked and behold an angel and in his right hand a key' that my parents said was from the book of Revelations. And he seemed to have not really embraced Christianity but just turned from evil because of Prof. Broom and Liz. Can someone explain to me how the heck I thought this was ok, I feel very sick and very guilty right now, like I am really ashamed God for ever getting the impression it was a Christian film or something. Help from anyone on this would be more than appreciated.

Well, ok, it's not a curse word or something, so I didn't know whether anyone would make any trouble of it or not. Either way, I would've normally cared to take alot of time to word things gently, but I was feeling like bottom of the barrell about the situation. Guess I know for future reference.
