They used to be known as thongs here, too, but people usually don't use that term anymore because it can mean a totally different item of clothing.
A whole lot of adults I know are totally against wearing flip flops to church. :\ I think it's mostly the stigma of it being beachwear, like a swimsuit or something.
Fashion trends change. Younger people generally seem to be far more accepting of challenging the fashion traditions, whether it be flip flops away from the pool or pajama pants at the store.
Although I've seen really old people in pajamas shopping, so I can't rule out any and all exceptions.
I think it's fine that they wore flip flops. They look nice and it's not like they put on yesterday's clothes and neglected to fix up their hair to meet the president. And like Doc said, the security was probably a lot easier to go through with minimal footwear.
And flip flops are far less expensive than heels most of the time. Yay for saving money.
