Fanfiction complaint

Postby yukishiro128 » Tue Aug 01, 2006 12:32 pm

I really like to read fanfictions about my favorite animes and such on the internet, but most of the stories I find aren't all that appropriate to read. If you know of a site (besides CAA, of course) that has fanfiction suitable for Christians, could you tell me what it is? Domo arigato gozaimasu :)

Well, Fanfiction.net has a pretty good ratings system, although there's unfortunately hardly any Christian content. Anything inaccurate is typically reported and the most extreme fics only go up to R. If you stick to the 'G' and 'PG' fics you're probably pretty safe (or is it 'E'?). The only problem is the fact that you have to sort through tons of not-so-good-fics in order to find the good ones.

And I have seen a few R-rated fics that are seriously close to crossing the line into more severe ratings O_o

Truly, the majority of fanfics are unfit to be read. Between their banal plotlines, insipid characters, atrocious spelling, and juvenile grammer, they do not lend themselves to consumption by intelligent minds. Would that writers of such could be punished for unleashing their drivel upon the world!

When I really want fanfiction, I go to ff.net because it's so big, and skim through people's favorites lists, preferably those of authors I already know to be good. I almost never go through the main pages of whatever series I want because there's way too much to sift through.

As harsh as that may sound...I agree 100%. I think I've read like, two truly well-written fanfics in my entire life, and those were only short (but good) one shots. Shout to AngelSakura. :thumb:

I enjoy fanfics. I don't like endings, so I actually use them as continuations or alternates to the series.
But I feel like a masochist when it comes to strolling through FF.Net. MediaMiner's even worse.
What gets me is, how much of a task it is to find something NON-yaoi...>.<...

Wading through yaoi is a hard task with some series... >.o Anyhow, like other people have said, fanfic.net had a decent rating system. You're usually pretty safe with K and K+. As for T.... Well sometimes T is okay and sometimes it borders and sometimes its really bad. Keep your mouse pointed towards the back button.

As for your original question, we have a fanfic readers thread here on CAA. It's not very active, but there are a few fanfics posted up that people found good/clean/well written (though maybe not all at once). Objectional content is mentioned when we give the links. The link to the thread is in my sig *points down*

Don't get me started *___* . Anyway, thanks for your link and everyone's comments. I have found over the past few days that the rating system does work!! But one more question: do the authors review their own stories, or is there like a central team of monitors? Because one story I happened to come across rated K+ was certainly not K+..if you know what I mean O.O

yes authors put a rating on their stories. however, if you think it's not correctly rated you can report it to the site management

 Okay, first: I go to FanFiction.net simply because it's probably the largest, most comprehensive fanfiction site. That being said, I hate, Hate, HATE the majority of the fics there. If they're not yaoi (or some similar disgusting pairing), they're Myself Plopped Into The Story. If they're not Myself Plopped Into The Story, they're Original Character Mary Sue. If they're not Original Character Mary Sue, they're unfit for consumption by anyone who's read a book before. If they're not unfit for consumption by anyone who's read a book before, then they just might be worth your while. I myself go wading through the sections of my favorite fandoms, seeking out those few fics that aren't complete trash. In this way, I've discovered how much I hate the things I've already mentioned, and at the same time I've discovered several very gifted authors. Sifting through the myriad of fanfics requires skimming through the summaries and instantly ignoring any ones that say something like, "shonen-ai," "I suck at summaries," "Better than it sounds! Really!" "This is my first fanfic, so be nice!" "Alternate Universe," and so on and so forth. In such a way, and also keeping my settings so that only fics rated K-T are shown, I can manage...barely.

Anyway, if you're looking for a good FMA author, I would recommend Dailenna. She writes very well, and very close to canon. She mostly just writes Mustang-Hawkeye romance, but does it much better than anyone else I've seen. She mainly does one-shots, but she has a few longer ones as well. There's a reason I've read and reviewed just about all her stories

Personally, I've only read a few good fanfictions, on here or the two that I found a while back on FF.net (one of them had a fave character of mine actually praying the rosary...I'm starting to think he's Catholic, but according to the superhero religion site, his religion is listed as "unknown"). Other than that, I used to enjoy writing my own fanfiction, until I found out it's technically illegal. That's why I wrote to DC Comics to ask them permission...and I'm still waiting for a reply.
