Michael, so do you mean like an actor of Jesus could be a type of graven image?

I will go see it. I have heard renditions of Christ's journey to Golgotha that nearly brought me to tears because it made me realize the price He paid. To see that on the screen (provided that it is Biblically accurate) would be astounding.

If this helps bring one more person to Christ, then all the better.

Two quick comments: Just because someone portrays Christ doesn't mean that is a graven image. And Jesus was not "Black" nor "White" but did have the complexion of someone living in Middle East (which would be a darker hue than say European).

Blessings,

So far as the debate goes, I'm definetely agreeing with cbwing0.

As for me watching the movie, I'm with Red Ninja -- if I sit down and start to use my imagination looking at the stations of the cross, I feel quesy enough :thumb: I don't think I'd appreciate it being made any more graphic in my mind's eye right now. :thumb:

I've been hanging around the movie site and watching the trailers for a couple months now. I'll certainly go see it if it's released to theaters in my area.

I am not here to debate, just to bring some news.

Apparently, ABC's Primetime will broadcast an interview of Mel Gibson with Diane Sawyer Feb. 16th, 10 p.m. Eastern Time concerning this movie (and probably any controversy surrounding it).

Just to let some of you know that are interested.

Personally, I do not watch many movies that are released these days. But, I really want to see this one. However, I will probably be to busy to see it when it is released in theaters.

i really want to see it. I'm a huge Mel Gibson fan (love all the movies he's done so far). Even though he's not IN it, it's still directed by him.

I've heard from several sources that why Mel Gibson made this movie is God kept on pulling on his heart to do this thing. he couldn't escape and so he submitted to what God wanted him to do, thats what he said. He then went on to say that He hopes by people seeing this movie, they understand what Jesus went through and that it will impact people's lives and hopefully save some unbelievers :thumb:

That's not what people mean when they say Jesus was african... They mean he was ethnically African which refers to middle african countries, not Egypt. And, that's just not biblical.

Anyhow, there's a couple problems I have with the movie, but it's really just picking nits. I'm wondering if the message on the cross is going to be written in Hebrew, because it has no significance in Aramaic, greek, or latin. In Hebrew, the message spells out Y-H-V-H, and that is why Caiaphas was so upset by it and wanted to change it... WHich also tells me that Hebrew was NOT a dead language by that time, besides the fact that Luke reports Paul as speaking Hebrew. (that's one of the problems I have, the aramaic thing, since the languages spoken would be either Greek (the main language) or Hebrew (the language of the Jewish people) and not Aramaic...)

Anyhow, these are not important enough issues to me to not see the movie or want to show it to my friends. This looks to be a very powerful film, as shown by how much hatred is directed at it by non-christians and those moving to "combine" all the world religions into one (which a real Christian can not agree to) and why so many Christians are in such strong support of it. I look at this controversy and hear people saying things like "The New Testament is anti-semetic" even though all but one of the new testament writers were Jewish, all 12 of Jesus inner circle of disciples were Jewish, and most of the rest of them were as well.

I have a lot to commit on but that would probally only cause more problems so I'll just keep my mouth shut and stick to the topic  I actually want to see it. One conversation mum and I had in the car coming home from school was about the movie. Listen to one of the local Christians stations and they mentioned how many people are in an uproar because of the violence and such in the movie. This is what happen, or close enough to it (I haven't seen it so I can't say for sure). But really, why such an uproar about this movie and not about all those horrible and disgusting movies. People are afraid, at least thats how I see it. But to continue and stop my awful rambles for now, I do look forward to seeing the movie.

I totally agree with Eire Wolf on that one. If you think it's wrong and you do it anyway, you are sinning, even if it's not wrong. The Bible says that.

My church (I go to a Church of Christ) is renting out a whole theater for us and we get to sign up and see it together! It's on the first day, too, I think. It'll be so awesome!

...I can't believe they edited out the "Crucify Him!" part... :shake: That's just not right.

It is based on a faulty interpretation of the following verse:

"Anyone, then, who knows the good he ought to do and doesn't do it, sins" (James 4:17).

The error comes from reading the KJV, which has a somewhat akward wording compared with the NIV:

"Therefore to him that knoweth to do good, and doeth it not, to him it is sin."

As you can see, the verse is simply saying that intentionally doing evil is sin.

I think the movie is reallly supposed to let people realize how much Jesus did for them. Our witnessing group is going to send people to the theaters so we can be there if we see people who have questions.

I definitely want to see this film. Yes, it's going to be violent, but it'll help us realize the physical pain that Jesus had to suffer, even if we'll never fully understand how much it hurt him to have his Father allow him to be killed and to forsake him. It'll probably be one of the few movies where I start crying in the theater...

Definitely going to see it, most likely with the people in my care group. I think the violence is needed to really shine to light just what Jesus done for us. Paintings and sculptures of a crucifyed Christ makes it seem beautiful, not the horrible mess our sins got Him into. Probably going to cry a river later... *prepares boxes of tissue*

No no no! That's totally not what I meant! I explained that badly. What I meant was that everything that the Bibe says that is a sin is a sin. But if you think it tells you not to do something and in reality it meant something else and you are allowed to, if you still think it's wrong and you do it anyway, even though the action isn't a sin, your thought of disobeying what you thought was wrong is a sin. *gasps for air* Do you get it, or did I still mess it up. I agree with you guys. I was meaning something else. *sigh*

I get your point, though I would have to somewhat disagree. I personally believe that if God never says it's a sin or says it's not a sin, it's not a sin, period.

Of course, you also have to use MORAL judgement as well when determining what is a sin and not.

And seeing the Passion is not a sin nor does it violate the second commandment.

Okay first of all to what other people said about the movie violating the 2nd commandment:

If that were so, than all works of art depicting Jesus or God, including the Sistine Ceiling and other famous and respected works of art, would be violating the commandment. I think that's rediculous. Besides, Jesus was a real person, not just a divine figure. So any pictures/docmumentaries of him could be considered historical. And furthermore, we all know that Jesus was of Middle-Eastern ethnicity, yet nearly all the famous pictures show him as a European white guy. Is that blasphemous? I don't think so. As humans, we don't fully understand things outside of the flesh, which I believe is one of God's purpose for putting Christ on earth as a human. So why can't we draw and make movies about Jesus? It's not idolatry. It's out of awe and love and desire to surround ourselves with images of our Savior. I believe this film has great evangelical potential, and I also believe that this is God's plan for Mel Gibson.

I will see this movie, and I'll probably cry, but you know, it'll make me appreciate the Sacrifice more.

Today in church our pastor encouraged everyone to go see the movie, and our church even g=has two seminars planned regarding how to effectively use the film as an outreach tool. Our pastor saw an early screening then went to an interview with Mel Gibson up in Chicago. He thought the movie was great cinematically, and thought the portrayal of Christ's last hours was Biblically sound.

My church announced last week we had bought out an entire showing and encouraged the congregation to buy tickets from the church office to give to their unsaved friends. The cool part is that my pastor will get to speak before and after the movie, including giving an altar call, so I hope that the Lord will do a great work that night. Now, unfortunately, I'll be 1700 miles away from the church that day (got a plane to catch for Maine) but I can tell pastor Ron really sees this as an opportunity to reach out. And as a safeguard, I think it's great he will be able to speak after the film and iron out any possible controversies and make sure the audience will know the truth before they leave.
